You guys know none of this is binding right? Like, you can change or add or delete or whatever whenever you want.

We don’t do enough of looking back at these lists and making people eat crow. There’s gotta be someone here who put Greta Van Fleets first album at the top of their list and now regrets it. Right?

Is this any good? I haven't had the time to give this a listen. Evil Friends has been getting a few spins recently around here though

I really liked that last Glass Animals album. Then everyone decided they were trash. I look like a fool!

Some music resonates more at a particular time and place and some sticks with you your whole life. I can conjure in my head the exact moment I first heard Vitalogy, but couldn't tell you when I first heard Ocean Blvd or if I've even listened to it all the way through in one sitting. No album in 2023 grabbed me anything like a 'this one will be heard forever' type record. boygenius was probably the closest.

I don't need to like an album forever to name it one of the best in a single year, life is way too short for that nonsense

Yeah, there are a lot of albums from 2023 that I love but I'm not sure any of them will end up on my like all-time list. That feels like an unreasonably high bar.

exactly, I mean, Barbie: the album created some good memories for me and is notable for simply being BARBIE THE ALBUM; I think the fact it got made and did so well is amazing (same with TMNT MM)

:heartbeat:

And there will most certainly be individual songs from these records that remain in heavy rotation for years and years. I'm already spinning Dance The Night (Dua Lipa) and Not Strong Enough (boygenuis) and A&W (Lana Del Rey) on a weekly if not daily basis.

There are a ton of strong 2023 songs that are contenders for my "forever" list.

Okay. That took some catching up. This is, admittedly both somewhat predictable yet batshit crazy - I mean having a country album, a metal album, octogenarians, Jersey heart on the sleeve rock, and a post-humous album all in the top ten. The ten that missed it are just as all over the place.

The 10 who got away, or the honorable mention:

Geese - 3D Country
Duane Betts - Wild and Precious Life
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - The Silver Cord (gets better on repeat listens)
Robert Finley - Black Bayou
Bob Dylan - Shadow Kingdom
Fantastic Negrito - Grandfather Courage
Iggy Pop - Every Loser
Metallica - 72 Seasons
Tell Everybody! (21st Century Juke Joint Blues From Easy Eye Sound)
Mikaela Davis - And Southern Star (the last 2 songs on this are essential listening)

…and my top 10:
(10) The Arcs - Electrophonic Chronic
(9) The Gaslight Anthem - History Books (sound ain’t great but the songs pop after a few listens)
(8) Queens of the Stone Age - In Times New Roman
(7) Black Pumas - Chronicles of a Diamond
(6) Dogs in a Pile - Bloom
(5) King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - PetroDragon Apocalypse; or Dawn of the Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Eternal Damnation
(4) Brad - In the Moment You’re Born
(3) Gov’t Mule - Peace…Like a River (this one slays unexpectedly)
(2) Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country - Reflector (the playing by the band is incredible)
(1) Rolling Stones - Hackney Diamonds

Them covering Rolling Stone Blues at the end is the most full circle career Andrew Watt produced swan song moment since Earthling.
