So I spent a bit of time with the curated Spotify wrapped radio thing. Kinda neat -- there's a DJ who explains what each segment will contain. I did laugh when he said "your 6th most listened to band, Blur... we've dug up some songs you probably haven't heard" and proceeded to play "Girls & Boys". That's one of my favorite Blur songs. It was a single!

Is it possible or common for a sound engineer or producer, during a studio guitar performance, to capture some of the strings on one side while the rest of the strings are captured on the other side?

For example do we ever hear something like… EADG being plucked on the left while BE are being plucked on the right, from a single performance?

Absolutely not common. What a hassle.

The closest thing I can think of is Phil Lesh's (Grateful Dead) bass, which had wiring for each individual string. They got pretty wacky during their "wall of sound" phase.
