There's two things that have puzzled me about the lefty reaction to all for a while now and reading this reminded of the first one: "Why are ceasefire demands never conditioned on Hamas surrendering?":
"Every once in a while I'll see a well-meaning liberal type on X write something like, "yeah I think Israel's military action is excessive, too much civilian death and destruction, but I'm kinda puzzled why people on the left don't call for Hamas to surrender. It's not like Hamas isn't an evil reactionary organization, peace isn't really possible with them in charge, and there would then be no excuse for Israel to continue to level Gaza."

I have an answer: Any real concern the relevant "people on the left" have about Gaza's civilians, about the prospects for peace, or about Hamas reign of terror are subsumed by their number 1 priority, which is that Israel lose. Hamas surrendering means Israel wins. A cease-fire with Hamas still in power means Israel loses. That's all that ultimately counts, which is why they demand a cease-fire, but never with the condition that Hamas be disarmed and removed from power."

The other being that if Hamas really is a tiny and unpopular faction in Gaza (whom Israel estimates at about 30,000 fighters) that does not represent the broad perspective of ordinary civilians there, why do the other 1,980,000 Gazans not rise up against them? If what is said about Hamas' popularity is true, they out number Hamas ~65:1 and could fight back if they chose to. Instead they choose to fight Israel and watch their children suffer and die in an avoidable conflict.

Just go and punch Hamas in the face a bunch of times. How hard could it be?

Suggesting unarmed civilians should overthrow a particularly ruthless terrorist organization is giving me poo-brained 'Murican "try to take my rifle away and we'll rise up and overthrow the government!" vibes. Good one, ya helmet.

Maybe when you and no one you know has regular access to food, water, fuel, communication, shelter, healthcare, education, or safety, you lack the mental bandwidth for revolution.

Yeah, apparently half of them are starving. But if they keep their dukes up I'm sure they'll be fine.

Maybe if we bomb a refugee camp that'll light a fire under them.

It's interesting that the simplest answer is not considered

A journey of a thousand miles begins with one simple overthrowing of Hamas.

The simplest answer being what? Release the hostages? Do you really think Israel is going to let up on the pounding of Gaza/Hamas just because the hostages are all released? There is no way.

Differentiating Hamas from Gaza was always dumb, and both sides did it early on. Pure cope.

It was never about Hamas. It was about and remains a genocide.
