What I want is for this band to function as an authentic reflection of their personalities, yet I’m worried this article indicates that such authenticity would yield a quick and dirty grasp for re-established cultural relevancy, because it sounds like that is literally what they’re seeking. It all feels extremely cheugy on principle, and the sound quality of Wotman’s past work doesn’t argue this at all because it’s entirely orchestrated towards maximum playlist impact.
had to google "cheugy"

...

I THINK I know, but what do you mean by maximum playlist impact?

The first single is gonna blow this place up. I can’t wait! I might be more interested in our reactions to it than the thing itself!

can confirm that Trag is not in a rock music zone and would rather have a well produced ear pleasing old man listen (he loves new wilco) and any comment about pj rocking with wottman is sure to turn him off

Mike is literally telling guitar.com that he's going crazy with the lead guitar doing things like with Reach Down. Isn't that what you are saying you want? Is that not an "authentic reflection of [his] personality"? He says this album is "heavier" - I think many of us would argue the band is at their best when they are bringing the heavy sound. That's grunge. Watt is a huge Pearl Jam fan. I have to believe he gets that.
You raise a good point. The reality is, I think their strongest material since Matt joined tends to be more moderate tempo / moodier material, from Nothing As It Seems and Of the Girl, right up through DOTC and Comes Then Goes.

Excessive boost of high frequencies, heavy compression, digitally simulated analog saturation, and drum samples.

Going HARD on Peter Gabriel right now...

But I'm still spinning Shellac and The Breeders regularly, PLUS older Pearl Jam!

It makes the song stack up to all the other material on a shuffled playlist

Historically, the people who are "worried" at this point about the new album just aren't gonna like it.

at the end of the day i will love this upon first release and it will stay in heavy rotation for a few months until i listen to it less and less because of life and other music releases. It will then just take its place alongside some other pj releases that I will never have the same emotional connection to as those that were released in my teens/early 20's because i am old.

But those first few months are gonna be fun as hell :hooray:

We should listen to it together first time, then you'll have an emotional connection and it will be our favorite PJ album ever.

My record indicates I'll be the first to admit when proven wrong. Show me an album without the aforementioned technical touchstones of a band grasping for relevancy and I will yield.

Albini is an awful choice for them. But I’m not sure what article you guys read, but the one I read yielded two key takeaways:

1. Bands that are over the hill and no longer functioning like a culturally relevant creative ensemble require fresh, outside perspective to get them back to a place of fruitful creativity and cultural import

2. Despite his bread being regularly buttered by Billboard, Andrew Wottman is a rock fan at heart, and we shouldn’t let his discography color our preconception of what he can bring to the table

These two ideas are diametrically opposed to one another.

And not for nothing, but when has a band working under the confines of #1, when paired with a hot producer, turned out a great record?

Beatles + Spector gave us the uneven Let It Be and then broke up

U2 + Danger Mouse = Songs of Innocence

RHCP + Danger Mouse = The Getaway

Aerosmith + Jack Douglas = Music From Another Dimension

Rolling Stones + Don Was = Voodoo Lounge

Metallica & Lou Reed + Hal Willner = Lulu

Pink Floyd + Bob Ezrin = A Momentary Lapse of Reason

Marianne Faithful + Hal Willner = Easy Come Easy Go

So much past glory rekindled on these albums!
Bruce Springsteen + Brendan O’Brien = The Rising
Let me tell you, Homer Simpson is cock of nothing!

I'm here to discuss the music, which is far more interesting than all the bloviations. Without the music, none of us are here.
