I respect and admire this about you, if you're being honest... I wanted so badly to like it but turns out I need coherent narrative of some sort

I don't know quite what you mean but I find it a very ambitious movie that's clearly very personal and emotional, pulled off very skillfully from an artistic standpoint, so I like it a lot. And yes it is difficult and sometimes unpleasant but I don't mind that. I also found it wildly funny. It's the only Ari Aster movie I've really loved

What I meant is I need some kind of story thru-line to grab on to, otherwise it just feels like floating around aimlessly... I get he has anxiety and trauma, and the visuals are great and real artsy and all, but can we make some kind of a story out of it at least?

Story is not the most important element of every movie, at least to me. But in any case, I believe he did

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Watching Heat again. It gets better every time I see it. There are some minor technical aspects that have begin to stick out for poor execution, but the elemental quality of the story just gets deeper and deeper.

I wish that Neal and Eady got like seven more minutes to flesh out their relationship. Just like 2-3 early scenes to establish why he’s so taken with her

Its also fleshed out in the book, his reasons and choices behind Neal.

I started the audiobook last night. First chapter is a brief rehash of the movie, then it picks up with Shiherlis and Nate (Kilmer and Voight) after Shiherlis has his gunshot wound cleaned up, with some flashback stuff on Shiherlis and his wife and how they came together.

The guy who reads it is super heavy handed with a very "hard boiled" sort of voice, so I’m not sure if I’ll stick with the audio…I may just need the hard copy. We’ll see. But I like the story so far.

yeah, that first part is small but it kinda works to setup what Shiherlis will be up to in the future.

Watched Beau again tonight, inspired by my earlier exchange with Tree. Yeah, I fucking love this movie you guys. I love its spirit and the nightmarish, relentless feel-bad surrealism of it, how completely it indulges in long stretches of existential despair. It's a top 5 of the year for me

The movie is literally about Ari Aster's persecution complex and how weally weally mwad he is that NOBODY UNDERSTANDS HIM!!!!!!!!!!!

So, no, Ari, er, I mean Beau doesn't get any wins.

I just love the kind of batshit, super indulgent films that directors make as soon as they are allowed to, following their instincts and making something almost uncomfortably personal with complete disregard for the audience. Like The Life Aquatic, Under the Silver Lake, The Bad Batch, and even disasters like Southland Tales are fascinating to watch. Also it's really funny to me to think about whoever at A24 signed off on the budget for this thing thinking "we'll make millions!"

I love the Kafka-turned-up-to-eleven hellscape of the first hour, the hypnotic forest sequence, the recurring theme of Beau's total inability to communicate. Loved the cast, too, especially Nathan Lane. And how cool to hear David Mamet as the rabbi. It's full of memorable images, and gives you a ton to process and think about at a time when there seems to be a scarcity of ideas and movies are more literal than ever. It's a unique, very weird, very unguarded and honest movie. Been thinking about it all day

Like The Life Aquatic, Under the Silver Lake, The Bad Batch, and even disasters like Southland Tales are fascinating to watch.

In general, I'm also a fan of the conceit, as well as the other films you mentioned.

The difference with Beau is that it wasn't made with complete disregard of the audience. The audience is front and center. The audience is the point. The audience is the villain. And that level of narcissistic crybaby tantrum throwing just isn't at all interesting to me.

I don't know about that, but I've heard that same charge being thrown at a bunch of movies (and even music) that I love dearly so it checks out
