A quote from my original RM review of Beau:
The Argonaut wrote:I just don't think Aster has the stature or the wisdom to pull off something quite so indulgent.
Indulgence in a popular medium has to be a weird sort of double-track indulgence, for yourself on behalf of the audience. Otherwise you end up with something which may be technically impressive, but is only thematically interesting to the author and his psychotherapist

I'm not as smart as you guys to fully understand why, but I simply did not enjoy it after that first stretch in the city. I was bored and frustrated and maybe I'm just not capable of liking a movie like this cause of my inferior intelligence or lack of self awareness or something.

Baloney; I am neither the author nor his psychotherapist and I found it enthralling and very thematically rich

Also I just completely disagree with this

I enjoyed Saltburn. Your reviews of it being stronger as an aesthetic experience and as a mood film than plot helped prep me.

Feels like everybody in my life watched Saltburn over the last week or so and everyone's opinions are all over the place

Ari's been pretty upfront about it in a lot of interviews I've read.

I didn't agree with it as I wrote it, but I wanted to be provocative. I'm all for art that others love and I hate.

Matrix Resurrections is probably the most indulgent movie I can think of right now. Lana made that movie for Lana. I initially hated it because I wanted her to make that movie for me. But I've come to love that she didn't do that. Not everything is for me and there's so much stuff out there right now that that's ok. There's enough for me. I don't consider it an artist's failing if I don't like something, and I don't consider it my failing either.

I'm glad you love Beau. I hated it!

After Hours

Loved it very much. Scorsese with a tight 90-minute dark comedy? He’s really struttin’ his stuff here. Talk about some exquisite shot composition and camera movement!

Why have I never heard of this Griffin Dunne guy before? He’s great.

If he didn't say that in interviews, would it change your assessment of the movie?

What authors have to say about their own work tends to matter less than zero to me

Yess, one of the greats. Also a huge influence on Beau, I imagine.

See that's another one that I loved

Yeah I can definitely see that. I was thinking about Beau as I watched it.

Steve Albini wrote:Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.
