Immediately after their execution on Friday, state media re-ran video posts of what were presented as the defendants’ confessions, which Amnesty International said had been extracted by torture.

[...]

On Wednesday, a Twitter account published handwritten notes by the men appealing for public support. “Don’t let them kill us,” read one note, which went viral on social media.

Friends of the families of the men said one of them – Kazemi – had been suspended upside down by interrogators and shown a video of his brother being tortured. Kazemi was also allegedly subjected to mock executions at least 15 times.

In an audio message recorded inside Dastgerd prison, Kazemi said: “I swear to God I am innocent. I didn’t have any weapons on me. They [security forces] kept beating me and ordering me to say this weapon is mine … I told them I would say whatever they wanted, just please leave my family alone. I did whatever they wanted because of the torture.”

Kazemi’s sister said in an interview with the Shargh newspaper before the executions: “We demand to see evidence. They should present evidence that shows my brother was present at the time of the murder. The only evidence in this case is statements by others; one says ‘I heard from someone that it was Majid’, and another says that ‘Bahmani told us that Majid was there’.”

“We don’t intend to cause trouble,” she added. “We are neither against the supreme leadership [Iranian government] nor anyone else. We just don’t want our brother’s blood to be unjustly spilled.”
too bad the civilian population can't seem to overthrow the authoritarians

I think a few key differences arw that it's a civil war.

It's also politics.

Ukraine has support nearly the world over. Look at all the nations backing and meeting Zelensky.

Syria has much less clarity/support for Assad and/or those he's fighting with.

Wonder if at any point Europe will recognize that maybe they should not have let hundreds of thousands of fighting age men from their former colonies migrate there.

Is the implication that Fentanyl has only been an issue in North America, and Europe has been enjoying their sweet pure afghan black tar?

Any Bogans around to clear this up? Something about a proposed law to for aboriginal people to have a final say on land use, but apparently not relevant to urban cores? Something about being able to prevent basically any land use if they determine it to be sacred ground through aboriginal ways of knowing.

Just give them reservations and monopoly rights on casinos. It's worked out fairly well for the (few) geographically well placed US tribes.

For those aboriginals living in the interior, have them take over the lease for all the US satellite uplinks by Alice Springs and make the US pay for their reparations. Gotta get this done with the current US admin though.

The fun thing is, we no longer have any capability to replenish VLS tubes underway, so if anyone starts running low, they'll have to go to one of the few ports equipped to do so. Don't carry spare parts for some critical systems, so at least we're consistent.

They’ll stand by and even assist a genocide but they’ll go bombing an entire country if the flow of oil and trade is threatened.

This is all going to escalate now.

I think the Houthis had to have expected resistance against their actions. But not sure they thought the capital would be bombed.
