Look, it's entirely possible that this is what I'm drawn to and it works well despite, not because of Watt. My take is that Eddie is an artist that needs someone to push him to not be too familiar (which I imagine is the case for most successful artists after a certain point who don't have anything to prove) or, alternately, to help him understand which elements of his sound are what is really compelling.

I've been listening to Michael Stipe's solo output post REM (extremely limited) and there is song I quite like called 'No Time For Love Like Now'. There are moments in it where the magic that is unique to Stipe shines through, and you just wish someone was there to help him stay in that space longer, or to build around it. But who is going to tell Michael Stipe how to sing?

One of the things that I love about Earthlings is that I think Eddie is almost always singing in a space that showcases his strengths and accounts for the wear and tear of age. Even on some of the songs that don't do a ton for me (like Long Way) I still like how he sounds on them. If you tell me that's not due to Watt's recording I believe you. But I do credit his presence in making a difference, especially as some of other Eddie's more recent solo work (though there is a greater emphasis on the solo) doesn't showcase him nearly as effectively or feel first drafty in a way that Earthlings doesn't (Matter of Time, Flag Day, his collaborations with Elton John and Springsteen/Morello). Maybe he's bad behind the booth. But he is 1-0 in terms of getting Eddie to be the best Eddie he can be, and the little drips and drabs that have leaked out about the recording process have me optimistic the band will have written and recorded songs that highlight their strengths as a unit, which I am super excited for.

Yeah I agree with that. He seemed to also do that with the whole band at least Jeff and Stone seemed very happy with the sessions

The same Jeff who said he didn't really know what they had this summer, and that it didn't feel like an album? He also said he feels like the band SHOULD be "killing it right now" (Kyle Meredith interview). Just my two pennies but he doesn't sound convinced that they've reached their potential at the moment.

But yeah Stone seemed totally stoked, as did Mike in recent interviews.

I'm no artist by any means but Jeff should stick to music.

Still a fan of The Sheriff of course.

I believe in the buffalo rumor more than the prior track list I shared.

Also, the more I think about it, the more I believe the success of this album (IMO) rests almost entirely with the choice of mix engineer. If we hear Serbian Ghenea did the mix, there really is no hope. If it’s someone else, it just might be an awesome record.

lead single: a spritzy punker titled "beef on weck"
Spoiler: show
(Verse 1)
In a Buffalo town, where the snowflakes fall,
There's a beef on weck joint, hear the locals call,
Eddie's at the counter, ordering with glee,
A punky little sandwich, just like you and me.

(Chorus)
Beef on weck, with a side of punk,
Singing loud, in a smoky funk,
Guitar riffs spicy, like horseradish bold,
In this short and sweet tale, our story's told.

(Verse 2)
From the stage to the kitchen, it's a wild delight,
Drums banging, just like a hungry appetite,
Guitar strings strumming, like a hungry crowd,
Beef on weck anthem, ringing strong and loud.

(Chorus)
Beef on weck, with a side of punk,
Singing loud, in a smoky funk,
Guitar riffs spicy, like horseradish bold,
In this short and sweet tale, our story's told.

(Bridge)
Fists pumping, to the beat,
Beef on weck, can't be beat,
Punky passion, in every bite,
In this short jam, we ignite.

(Verse 3)
As the night unfolds, and the crowd cheers on,
Beef on weck memories, forever drawn,
A punky anthem, for the hungry souls,
In this short and sweet song, our story rolls.

(Chorus)
Beef on weck, with a side of punk,
Singing loud, in a smoky funk,
Guitar riffs spicy, like horseradish bold,
In this short and sweet tale, our story's told.

The live guest possibilities are what usually catch my attention.
We've had MMJ & QOTSA guest spots. I'd love to see Annie Clark take a guitar solo on any PJ song one day.

Something to note in the 10c email about the Festival tickets:

"Pearl Jam’s performance date will be announced Jan 10 at 8am PT."

Makes one think the official tour announcement is coming January 10th at 11 am ET, right?

I thought of that too. Why would you announce the concept and then two days later announce the day? Seems like this is when Bottle Rock wanted to announce the lineup, and PJ asked them to hold off on identifying a date until weds, which would coincide with their larger tour announcement. Def a plausible outcome. We'll know soon.
