Imagine getting fired and still going on about it and complaining about it nearly 30 years later.

Can you sympathise with his situation a little bit?

It's more than just losing one job. Attaining a career as a professional musician on that level of success is something that happens to a tiny handful of people and requires a combination of genuine talent with an immense dose of good luck (right place, right time, right band, etc.)

That career was taken away almost as quickly as it began in a way he didn't expect (and arguably didn't deserve) and he was right back to square one, no doubt suspecting he would never have a pathway to that level of professional success again.

I don't think everyone can dust themselves off from that and move on, at least not very easily.

Agreed. Under those circumstances (and the fact that I'm sure this is mentioned in 95% of the press related conversations he has) I think Dave A has always been remarkably level about the whole thing

And they’re obviously mic’d differently than the rest of the record. More similar to Elderly Woman. And maybe Nothingman.

My vote is for reeds — those tom hits have too much girth for brushes.

Being pedantic, but I think probably it’s mic’d the same but mixed differently, with more of an emphasis on the OHs and space around the kit. It makes the song feel 3D in a way that most of Vitalogy doesn’t — to your point, you’re totally right, a lot like Elderly Woman; maybe not so much like Nothingman, where the drum ambience is more about a reverb effect.

My thoughts are almost the same re: reeds, but I was thinking the cymbal strikes instead of toms.

Maybe different mics on the drums? Or can that feel be accomplished with just the mix?
