The documentary showed a number of interviews with women and gay men who were treated very badly by the LDS church too. If you haven't seen it, you may find it very interesting to look into.
I found it disappointing actually. It glanced over an number of details about Joseph Smith, including that the call for polygamy just happened to coincide with his hiring of a hot new secretary. His death in Nauvoo, Illinois was really because he was ripping people off and forcing underage (even by 1800s standards) girls into marriage.
As I said, I could go on and on. My wife is an official church "apostate" and has done a truckload research.

hah, I'm not all that surprised by this information... I'm sure your wife is much better versed in the overall views and history of the church than I could ever be. The documentary was interesting to me because I knew almost nothing about Mormonism at all. I can't imagine what it must have taken for your wife to go through her own experiences with the church.

I definitely recommend checking out Trey Parker and Matt Stone's musical "The Book of Mormon". It's genius. There's a movie being made.

It features this brilliant song:

I believe that God has a plan for all of us
I believe that plan involves me getting my own planet

I believe that in 1978 god just changed his mind about black people!

"There is a reason why one man is born black and with other disadvantages, while another is born white with great advantages. The reason is that we once had an estate before we come here, and were obedient, more or less, to the laws that were given us there. Those who were faithful in all things there received greater blessings here, and those who were not faithful received less.”
- Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith

"Negroes in this life are denied the priesthood;
under no circumstances can they hold this delegation of authority from the Almighty. The gospel message of salvation is not carried affirmatively to them... Negroes are not equal with other races where the receipt of certain spiritual blessings are concerned..."
- Apostle Bruce R. McConkie

That's the third or fourth 'feminism is EBIL' piece I've seen in as many days. At least that was a little bit funny. Most of the others are just deluded.

Isn't Reddit supposed to be a cesspit though? I always thought that was the point of it.

I'm always annoyed when her articles consistently trend as Slate's most popular. Now I'm just plain angry.

I have never found advice columnists interesting to read, hence the prior annoyance. Because I ignored her, little did I know that she was giving horrible advice.
