I have a hard time keeping this one straight from the Tom Petty song on Earthling.lecherouslittlestump wrote:Take The Long Way should be the template for all PJ rockers going forward.

This is pretty much how I feel except i would trade quick escape for anything else besides retrograde or river crossKevin Davis wrote:Thanks, Anders!
LMS mentioned "Get It Back" -- that would be in the 'love' category for me too. Aside from "DOTC," which I think is credited to the whole band, all of my favorite Gigaton session songs were non-EV compositions.
An eight-track album comprising my 'love' and 'like' categories, plus "Get It Back," would be a slam dunk for me.
Who Ever Said
Superblood Wolfmoon
Dance of the Clairvoyants
Quick Escape
Get It Back
Never Destination
Take the Long Way

Re: Gigaton: Official album thread
Had a bit of a drive today so I put Giga on for the first time in a few years...holy shit did I enjoy it more than I remembered. The first 6 songs really flow together great and all are good to very good imo. Biggest surprise was Alright which honestly I had forgotten about but it just really worked for me now. I still love Seven O'Clock in all its schmaltzy yacht rock glory. SBWM works on the album but not sure I'd ever play outside that context. Who Ever Said is a very good opener.
The back half of the album kinda falls off a bit for me. Never Destination and Take the Long Way are my two least favorite songs on the album, they're okay but both are pretty basic uninspired rockers. I liked Buckle Up quite a bit more than I thought I would. Comes Then Goes is fantastic but it's a good 90 seconds too long. I still can't make up my mind on Retrograde, but my 7-year old daughter liked it a lot when the album came out so I'm partial to it.
It's been awhile since I revisited a PJ album and it came across considerably better (LB and BS certainly have not aged well for me) but this was a fun album to listen to listen to front to back. Will definitely keep it in the rotation.

I think this is their best album since Yield. At the same time I think Dark Matter might top this one just by the leaked clips we will see. Much, much better than Lightning Bolt.
I’d rank the songs:
1. Who Ever Said
2. Superblood Wolfmoon
3. Quick Escape
4. Take the Long Way
5. Alright
6. Dance of the Clairvoyants
7. Never Destination
8. Comes and Goes
9. Seven O’Clock
10. Buckle Up
11. River Cross
12. Retrograde

6. Dance of the Clairvoyants
7. Never Destination
8. Comes and Goes
9. Seven O’Clock
10. Buckle Up
11. River Cross
12. Retrograde

Since Vitalogy for me. Though I'd order my favorites a bit differently, and I think the top 4 of these just edge out the top 4 of S/TGigalogy84 wrote:I think this is their best album since Yield. Re: Gigaton: Official album thread
Whoever Said and Take the Long Way are the 5 star songs on this album for me.
SBWM, Quick Escape, Alright, and 7 O’clock are 4 star songs.
Comes then Goes, Never Destination, Retrograde, and River Cross are 3 star songs.
Buckle Up is two stars.
DotC is one star. I don’t understand the love for this at all. I hate this song.
I like their first 6 albums better by a lot, but I think this is their best work since Binaural.

I put this album over No Code but not the first 3 and Yield.

Far from No Code and Yield in quality (which arguably is Pearl Jam at their very best), and not as replayable over time. But it's a good modern Pearl Jam album. If Dark Matter is of a similar quality, I think Pearl Jam has made a really good comeback/recovery, after Lightning Bolt was their weakest album.

I've given this album a hard time, but the truth is 1-3 are incredible.

I agree with this...though i think Pearl Jam at their very best was more the Vitalogy-Merkinball-No Code era.Anders wrote:Far from No Code and Yield in quality (which arguably is Pearl Jam at their very best), and not as replayable over time. Looking at the entire catalogue there's never been a jump in quality between albums like we saw with Lightning Bolt into Gigaton. Huge comeback/recovery.

No ashes. Just an eternal flame.
