Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

"her" old husband being an unambiguously cruel and evil man, the personification of the class divide she'd just spent weeks learning all about, and all his dialogue where he loudly announced his intentions and spelling out "YOU ARE MY PROPERTY" just in case the audience was made up of literal children who couldn't figure out what one of the movies key themes are

was yet another example of the movie making the most facile, obvious choice, and after two hours of facile and obvious choices it was just extra annoying

I've watched several worse movies from 2023, but this one hurt me more because I had very high expectations

Last Looks. Very silly and didn't make much sense, but it was entertaining. charlie hunnam looks like a meth addict without his beard. Very disconcerting.

Can we also just talk a bit about the politics of Poor Things? What is it telling us? Feminism is having sex with all the men who want to have sex with you? The great feminist victory of this film is that she keeps her clit and married a simp? Also, she is a baby. Where is the consent? It's not possible. How is the guy who knows she is a baby allowed to get away with falling in love with and marrying her? He's a groomer. Are we supposed to be proud of Willem Dafoe for not fucking her? Because he seems to say that his decision is equal parts fatherly love and impotence.

And the ableism. Emma Stone acting like a non-verbal autistic is played for laughs. The man with the curves spine as a crawling John at the brothel is played for laughs.

I don't understand what people are getting out of the movie. What's the message? In what way was any of that crap funny?

Under the Silver Lake - I didn't know much about this going in, outside of Argo's strong recommendation. It was a real treat and easily my favorite Andrew Garfield role

Beau is Afraid - Aster is a mixed bag for me. I like aspects of Hereditary though it didn't work ulitmately, and I thought Midsommar was a big miss. When I read a snippet of the premise and saw Joaquin Phoenix's image on the poster, I was very much interested. I loved the first half, but my interest and enjoyment level did decrease as it went a bit. I still really enjoyed it, and Joaquin was great as expected

The Holdovers - Lower half Payne for me. I couldn't find much I actively disliked about it (sans maybe the dad storyline that's a bit played), but overall found it average. Will never not watch a movie with a Giamatti role such as this though.

The Creator - Pass.

Spring Breakers - Watched it.

I forgot to mention Triangle of Sadness. It was good to very good until the last section.

A theater near me is doing a classic 3D series…Creature from the Black Lagoon 1&2, House of Wax, Dial M for Murder, It Came From Outer Space, and more. Especially excited to finally see Creature 2 and ICFOS, haven’t seen those in 3D yet. More theaters should do 3D festivals, seems like a good way to do something that most people can’t replicate at home. And movies like Creature and House of Wax are so different when seen in 3D as intended.
