TV: The Daily Show with John Oliver

Post by tommymtcom »

Thoughts so far?

I'd say he's nailing it, although I may be a bit biased because I love John Oliver (if you haven't you should all check out the Bugle podcast http://thebuglepodcast.com/)

I definitely think there is potential for CC to add a third "news" show with John Oliver as the host.

Haven't had time to check out the episodes yet but I have high hopes, JO tends to nail a majority of his segments.

He's been doing a good job...The first night had me a bit worried with all the jokes about being British. But last nights was good, and I'm expecting good zingers to come.

Three episodes in and its pretty solid. Its the most I've watched this show in ages. I agree that once Stewart comes back Comedy Central could easily give him his own show.

Lewis Black stopping in the middle of his Back in Black segment, turning to him, and going "...Who the fuck are you??!" was pretty nice.
I might be able to get to an E-bow.

I've enjoyed the first two so far. Didn't see last night, but it's on the DVR.

he's doing really well. Oliver could perform well in his own show, but I'm not sure there's room for a third nightly news show on CC. At times Colbert and Daily Show hit the same material and one clearly falls short of the other, or the material just loses its spark even if both shows handle it well. Now, a show on Sunday or Friday night? Maybe.

I dunno, I've seen a few episodes with him now and he doesn't quite have the ability to bite the way Stewart does. He's funny, sure, but it's more gag and less zinger (or maybe that's just the bits I've seen).

Oliver still reads the teleprompter a bit too fast, I think, although he's gotten better since his first two shows. I know his cadence and all is part of his "Look at me, I'm British!" demeanor (which I do find genuinely funny, most of the time), and that Stewart's plodding, aging Jewish man persona is part of his, but I think I just prefer Stewart.

Like dkfan said, a Sunday night show could work (Friday night is just an awful night for TV; it just wouldn't get the ratings); maybe an international-news centered sort of show? Act I and Act II uses the TDS model, Act III replaces interviews with stand-up by new comedians? He could certainly keep that going for a few years. I mean, I don't think anyone wants to talk about it, but Stewart can't sit in that chair forever...

The problem with his demeanor and voice inflection is that I can't differentiate between him setting something up for a joke or him trying to be serious.

This. Actually I think this is exactly what I'm feeling--it's too fast, or the pauses seem too deliberate, too rehearsed. Or, naturally rehearsed, but not like Stewart, where it often just sounds like he's talking to you rather than performing.
