So, after McCready's quote, do you still think this is a song about " a universe that doesn't care but somehow still manages to honor the moment" or now admit it's about an afterlife?

Now Illumineddie, we both know that mike's comment is irrelevant since the music has nothing to do with the lyrics.

It can if the lyricist discusses the motives with the soloist. What I meant was, and if you re-read what I said, the songwriter (Jeff) and lyricist (Ed) most likely were not telling the same story when each were born (the song and the lyrics). Mike's part most likely came much further down the line and he found out what the lyrics were about.

So, let me repeat the question...

Stip... do you still think this is a song about "a universe that doesn't care but somehow still manages to honor the moment" or now admit it's about an afterlife?

Also, do you still think that Ed decided to use a direct quote from Neil Young's song and not borrow the motivation for that original lyric?

I think ed used the lyric without knowing it was a neil young lyric, and neil threatened to sue his ass unless the album was dedicated to him and Eddie mows his lawn for the next year.

:( I've had a long day.

That said I think the yellow moon in the rise here refers to the idea or hope of the perfect life as described in the neil young song, in the after life.

The bullet and graves in the bridge is enough for me to think its about death, and the 'tonight the moon I go' gives me the impression that its a choice on the narrators part.

(It could be the metaphorical suicide of a former version of yourself and the life after that though.)

That doesn't mean it couldn't also be what stip said, the narrators thinking about killing themselves and the moon shows up reminding the character of the neil young song. Which could be taken as a coincidence, or as the universe giving a sign. I may have misunderstood stip here though.

And I've put way too much thought into this.

All it means is you may share the same interpretation Mike does.

I still don't think this song has much to do with an afterlife. I think it has to do with a suicide--the moments right before and the moment of, with the moon rising just as the subject's life ending. The solo captures that moment of release. Maybe the soul ascends to heaven. Maybe there is no soul. I don't think the song says one way or the other. it's largely irrelevant to the moment being captured, and offers the listener the chance to interpret what comes next however they want.

Yeah the afterlife thing only really comes out if you're trying to fit it together with the neil young song. But i don't think its an important part of the song or anything. I haven't actually heard the neil young song, i should probably get on that.

Or its got something to do with the boston bombings
