Some compare it to Unthought Known, which I don't really see at all other than the new wave aspects. UK was a highlight of BS and one of the better tracks of the last decade for me.
I think it's this element:

this is me
singing low,
while the kick drum's kicking.
Grumble grumble,
mumble woah.
It's so sad and sick'nin'

NOW I'M SINGING
HIGHER UP
AND THE BASS HAS COME IN
ADD SOME ECHO
AND THEY'LL ASSUME
SOMETHING'S ACTUALLY HAPP'NIN'

 or :gomez: or :shake: or :waah: or :finger: , or a mixture of all of the above?

don't feel bad. you can ruin any piece of art if you include the stage directions.

Sometimes lately I just think of this as a McP message board, and I feel less bad about how much time I spend here.

I just thought the effort was subpar.

My newer stuff was never going to compete with the wildly experimental nature of my middle period, guys. Fatherhood, age, and Brendan o'Brien have all taken their toll....let's all just set our expectations low, and enjoy my sweatpants phase.

Although, since I own zero sweatpants, it's going to be a little more showy than you might like.

Maybe I forced myself to like it. I mean, I did have to reread it 74 times before I enjoyed it.

Good, I didn't like the experimental phase. Your new stuff is full of melody and catchiness.

So... As it turns out, I think Lightning Bolt is a stupid name for this album, but I'm not sure what I would call it. Any ideas?

I had only heard MYM and Sirens before yesterday, and I liked them both. Finally got a copy last night and have listened to it 3 times. Was pretty meh the first time through, but getting better with each listen. Some brief thoughts:

4 great songs to start - LB was first song I was undecided on, some of the lyrics are kinda cheesy
Favorite song by far is Yellow Moon
I like LTRP and SBM more than most
As of right now YM should have closed the album, FD is just ok
