Within the context of how well both series were written and performed I wouldn’t call it a gimmick. It’s obviously going somehwere. But I can see how it didn’t land for you.
I haven’t seen anyone else take issue with online though tbh. And there’s nothing people like more than descending on something like that.

Finished S02 last night. S01 ended fairly similarly though with a nice TV bow wrapping up the season.
Overall I am enjoying it, some fantastic performances and soundtrack with just enough television elements. It is just that though a TV show and not a documentary after all.
