What’s funny to me is either you want publicity or you don’t. This approach is oddly in between. The hard core already know they will listen to this. Everyone else won’t unless it is attached to some other trend. That’s how music works now. TikTok, commercials, big podcasts not Spin or any other old media outlet. When was the last time you listened to a song or album because of old media?

pearl jam are not promotion heavy but they havent been anti publicity in decades (since yield). you’d like people to know about what you’re doing but there are limits to how much work you’ll put into that awareness

and there target audience are still non hardcore gen xers who need to be reminded that this exists, and this is how things seep into people’s consciousness

My point is everyone in that room already likes Pearl Jam and no one outside of that room will care about anything anyone in that room writes, so if it is an event equivalent to a friends and family soft opening, then cool, why announce it publicly? It remains to be seen how this is or is not connected to further publicity, but at least with Gigaton we had some information by the time this type of event happened. I guess why go to any effort at all when you are in Pearl Jam's position? Just release the art. They are increasingly irrelevant to society as a whole compared to their peers, so if that matters, then embrace publicity, if not, then just record, do the cover art,and release as soon as its done. That would generate much more publicity.

Wow, severely underestimated the Gigaton love in here. Now, I'm no Gigaton hater. I think it has its ups-and-downs and is fine overall. I guess I really have to reset my expectations of "heavy!" when used to describe old-dude Pearl Jam. This happens every album cycle for the past 20 years, and I always fall for it. Who knows? Maybe my thoughts will change when the door is taken out of the equation.

when was the last time this band was actually heavy? at most they're "hard rockin' " in the kind of way you hear when you go to a sports bar
