I have to admit, from what I heard, my immediate response was that it sounded pretty awful - like various iterations of, I don't know, Quick Escape and Sirens. The weakest parts of the last two records, amplified and glossed up.

I know how ridiculous it is to make any judgements based on snippets of music distantly recorded through a door, however, so I'm happy to eat my hat if this thing rules.

It becomes clear at album release time that these guys probably benefited from having an overbearing record company managing the rollout and hype machine. They always seem to muddle through it uncomfortably, not really knowing how it should be done.

Is anyone surprised by this take ??

I’m more worried about an ed word salad.
Well one of the articles mentioned something along the lines of Matt’s drumming drowning out Ed at times… so perhaps he sings right the way through all the guitar solos!

I too feared the loud Vedder mix. Tempering myself from too much negativity.

This could be a decent release but chances are it'll be 5 or so tracks that I can listen to and ditch the rest.
The “5 or so tracks” is how I approach them now. For me, it’s a safe bet.

I just want this record to rock. Straight forward balls to the wall rock songs. Eddie wailing like he's 25 again. Mike shredding. Drum solos from Matt.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who got sick of "weird" Pearl Jam from the mid 90s and 00s. Pussy songs like In My Tree or Pilate or Sleight Of Hand. How the f are they gonna get the crowd going?

They need to make an album of anthems. Something to mosh to in the arena surrounded with the Jamily.

I just want it to fucking rock.

I’ve found a lot to love in every era of Pearl Jam. Even the stretches I liked the least still has music I treasure, and has a place in the greater whole. Each piece is unique and true to itself, and enhances the other moments by virtue of expanding the scope and complexity of the whole. I am incredibly excited to see how. And that’s the real extent of my expectations. After thirty years I trust the band.

Honestly I'd be happy if we had 11 songs on the same intensity as Blood or Once.

I haven’t listened to the door video, but I agree that Quick Escape and Sirens are the weakest parts of their respective records (other than that the end of Quick Escape is a fantastic capturing of the band playing their hearts out). I sure hope this record doesn’t sound like iterations of those two songs.

This album will suck. Mark my words. They have amassed one album's worth of great songs in the last 20 years. Nothing's changed. This album will suck. One maybe two good songs will be present. I refuse to fall for it again.

I love this door leak. What a moment in time.
