Meeting someone at a party, happy hour, networking event, etc., getting through X minutes of small talk, and then just saying “This conversation has run its course” and moving along.

as a joke, when talking with a group of people at work, i'll oftentimes interrupt them mid-sentence, say "i'm bored of this colloquy," and just walk away.
