Don't get hung up on the literal meaning of that label that's been applied. People are inherently not perfect communicators of the feel of a thing. I take this to mean that we get the side of Ed that's a twangy crooner, and we get the style of the band that's powered by a hard-charging MFC. Those are both things that I love about PJ, and they've both been around a long time. I've listened to the metal door leak so many times, and there is stuff there that absolutely has me hooked. I think this album will at the very least be a solid Pearl Jam album. To even dream of asking for that at this stage in their career seems preposterous.

i didn't think the person meant they were Tom Petty and Soundgarden, at the same time

i thought they meant the Ed song about his kids was like Tom Petty

and a bunch of other stuff was like Soundgarden, bc Wottberg was there this time to prevent Ed from ruining it and replacing it with more of his ukelele songs he wrote in his indoor jungle gym treehouse where he hides from the outside world and reviews his bank accounts on his iPhone and masturbates to pictures of Stone firing Dave A that were obtained from the breakfast Diner's security cam

I take it to mean this will sound best in a convertible sports car, screeching out of the marital home before fist pumping your divorce lawyer. Extra deluxe audio fidelity if you're aged 45-55.

I laughed so hard my wife on the complete opposite side of the house inquired.

Seriously, do you think Jill showed up at his crib for the first time and was like “hey man why the fuck do you have a fire pole in your house?”

There's a chance that "Petty/Soundgarden" means that it sounds like Dani California

"I unsuccessfully tried to get into the event, went around back and listened to the whole thing from outside. Caught Ed, Jeff, and Mike leaving after. Mike stopped to chat, sign and take pics, Ed and Jeff didn't want pics but signed for me. Album sounded good! Pretty drum heavy with some rippin Mike solos the first few songs, second half a little softer with some atmospheric elements Other notable people I saw in attendanc... Andrew Watt, Chad Smith, Chris Chaney, Josh K, Olivia V."

"Definitely front loaded with the louder, faster stuff. 2nd half gave me a softer, soaring atmospheric vibe."

"I got In Hiding and Hail Hail feelings from a couple on the first side."

Why say it sounds like Soundgarden rather than comparing it to other heavy Pearl Jam songs like Animal, STBC, or Grievance? Must be Matt's drumming right? But then, I would never say Matt's heavy drumming in the past ('98-'00) made them sound like Soundgarden. Hmmm.

Front loaded with louder faster songs and the second half softer and more atmospheric.

Sounds like a PJ album.

if someone makes a soundgarden comparison i think of a kind of heavy patience and immensity to their music that i dont usually think of with pearl jam, who tends to prioritize immediacy and emotional accessibility.

But In also dont think of animal, SBTC, or Grievance as heavy. For me heavier pearl jam songs might include: Deep, Garden, Go, NAIS, Sleight of Hand. Songs that feel like a weight is crushing down

Yes. This.

Hoping the book takes this approach to the music.
