for me that would be the difference between a cool classic rock PJ album and a true "spirit of grunge" PJ albumWalker Bait wrote:I hope so... I think my “fear” about tonight’s release is that it’s too akin to Mind Your Manners. If it is, that doesn’t automatically mean I’ll dislike it. But I’d prefer not to be put in that position.

catchy and emotional weight/depth are hardly mutually exclusive as well

I'm not getting any of that. I'm thinking it will be heavy like Footsteps Garden or Just a Girt. Of course faster tempo but I think it will have that weight and darkness to it.Jaeti wrote:I think my “fear” about tonight’s release is that it’s too akin to Mind Your Manners. definitely not, I'm looking to see what this song is about lyrically; if it's about another hot middle aged stunner and he was stunned, I won't be too happystip wrote:catchy and emotional weight/depth are hardly mutually exclusive as well

there's very little you can call super catchy in their middle period, but sure, they were never an avant garde noise rock bandRockPusher wrote:Shit man, that combo was always the calling card of this band.stip wrote:catchy and emotional weight/depth are hardly mutually exclusive as well

Re: 12th album rumors and speculation
Thankfully I'm not getting ANY MYM vibes. Not that it's a bad song, it's just not my fave type of PJ. I'm getting more of a "Just a Girl" type vibe... and no, not the No Doubt one.Jaeti wrote:I think my “fear” about tonight’s release is that it’s too akin to Mind Your Manners. I’ll say it. MYM is bad, and embarrassing live.Walker Bait wrote:Thankfully I'm not getting ANY MYM vibes. Not that it's a bad song, it's just not my fave type of PJ. That album is just massively disappointing. When I saw Sleeping by Myself on the track list I knew. An EV re tread?

Re: 12th album rumors and speculation
I don't think MYM is bad at all; in terms of songwriting it's a fairly successful attempt at what Ed's been trying and failing for ages, a Ramones song; the worst thing about it is that the production went dollar store Blink 182 instead of Ramones
I genuinely enjoy the "go to heaven! that's swell! how do you like your living hell?" section, I always enjoy shots at homophobic fundies and Ed's pretty good at them

I like MYM more than Comatose, probably (but I like the "if it's illegal to be in love" part)

I fucking love Mind Your Manners. It's a favorite. I agree that it's maybe the best version of a song Ed had been trying to write for a while (though SBWM may top it - they are reaching for something similar even if they're tonally different)
Here's a question. What is the last perfect Eddie vocal performance for you - one that captures 100% of what you want from him, no caveats. There are a few moments on Earthlings that come close.
Mine is probably Hard Sun.

Granting they're not dissimilar songs, if tonight's release is more "Comatose" than "MYM," then I will be quite happy, I think.

It sounds nothing like the Ramones... it is a punk rock facsimile but far, far from the Ramones. I hear shades of Bad Religion, Hüsker Dü, or even MötorheadMs Harmless wrote:I don't think MYM is bad at all; in terms of songwriting it's a fairly successful attempt at what Ed's been trying and failing for ages, a Ramones song

It’s a Motörhead ripoff
