I like short songs look at Wouldn't it be Nice by the Beach Boys oo White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane they cove so much territory musically in a tiny window. When Pearl Jam do a short song they seam to just speed it up to get over with.

Now, "Beverly Hills" by Weezer -- the other song this will probably sound like -- is a whopping 3:17

I mean yeah those are good short songs, I just think Pearl Jam have been trying some things they're not good at for a long time now, short songs being one of them; Gigaton showed the start of a course-correction, I want more

I agree completely. I just would love them to get good at it.

RockPusher wrote:I'm certainly nervous that the album will be short without a lot of long songs. Earthling is 13 songs and 48 minutes. If it were 11 songs, that would be right around the 40 minute mark. Hopefully I'm right about Watt understanding how critical the "jam" aspect of this band is, and he adjusts accordingly.

i have faith that Wottmansczysnki added a 7-minute Mike solo to each of these songs

I realized even my absolute favorite PJ songs never leave me wanting more. In comparison Lateralus from Tool is 10 min and it's over in a blink and i.want ro repeat it over and over.

Quality > Quantity for me no matter the track length. I just want it to be a good song and the clips are promising.
Sure, but let's take midtempo burners- this band seems to have a sweetspot in the 4 to 5 min zone (I haven't done any analysis, this is just what my memory says). These songs need time to breathe. Solo. Bridge. If we're lucky, second solo, a bit more unhinged, and then LET IT PLAY OUT (I'm looking at you, BO'B).

If there's a fast little Blood type fucker of a song, then sure, 3 min is fine. But give me something else that I can really sink my teeth into as a counterbalance.

I understand what you mean. Even if a song is five to seven minutes long I would like it as long as it is good. There have been times where bands would release longer songs but I’ve felt like they would overstay their welcome.

Really? I really like some of the shorter songs like Spin The Black Circle, Animal, MFC, Comatose…. I can’t imagine them trying to make those songs longer. They sound perfect the way they are to me.

That was my point and I'm talking like sub 3 min songs. I would say of those MFC and Comatose could have been expanded. What was more the point is you can have a 1:56 sec song with out it being spritz or acoustic folk singer dribble. No Ceiling is a perfect short song in contrast Setting Forth is a song with the bones but is bulimic and just doesn't thrive.

YouTube fella says 50 mins - an hour.

We shall see if his recollection of time is accurate.

60/11 = avg track length of 5.45 (seems unlikely)

50/11 = avg track length of 4.55 (more reasonable)

Gig was 57 min with 12 tracks for a mean of 4.75

Ten was 53/11 for 4.82 (but w huge caveat of master slave at the end of release)

Backspacer clocked in at a depressing 36/11 or 3.27 - ouch!

I could see anywhere from 45-55 minutes.
