I can't help but feel partially responsible for this. The last 12 months all ive done is hammer your brain about this stuff.

International bonus track: Dark Matter (Room Ambience and snare + or - 3db version)
We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

I do - at least, I think it's OK.

I'm interested to see how I feel about it in the context of the album and I hope there's at least a few other songs that are more my speed.

I do wish it sounded more live and the guitars looser. Every phrase is very clipped, measured.

I would've made Mike's solo drier and higher in the mix, the reverb makes it sit back further than I'd like.

I wonder how many of you who claim to love Ed's voice in this new song, if it were the first time you were hearing this singer's voice, if you'd feel the same about it. I also wonder if I'm missing something. Maybe there is something in my brain that reacts to a frequency other people aren't hearing or something.
OF COURSE it's partly about historical context. Absolutely no question.

Does he sound older and weathered, with less range? Yes, of course! I'm just glad that he and the band are still a constant in my life as I get older. That's all I need. Honestly, I wouldn't be interested in any "modern rock" song by a new band at this point. None of this exists in a vacuum.
"you only love your wife now because you always did" is what the historical context argument sounds like

8-10 listens in.

It’s an absolutely solid effort. Has so many little things to love sprinkled throughout. My criticisms would be minor and only marginally detract from the overall “score”.

I wish the outtro was another 2-4 bars of just the chorus riff (no vox) and Mike scattering some licks throughout (but not a continuation of the solo).

Ed seems to lose the crisper vocal delivery on chorus 2, that he has in chorus 1.

I wish there was something more substantial after chorus 1 before verse 2. It’s a filler. Andrew should have pushed them here.

So many GOOD things in this 3:31. Pre chorus feels very binaural to me - vibes of grievance.
I have always wanted guitars in front of Ed, and they are finally louder in the mix. The palm muting before mikes solo is dreamy. Wish there was more write large. Ed largely stays within his comfortable register - this makes the song work well.

Bottom line: this passes the litmus test of being able to blast this for my buddies (we are early 40s) and feel confident. I got the same feeling from DoTC. Sure this is not as excitingly new and experimental, but I think they nailed their signature sound here as best as one could hope for 60 year olds 33.5 years in.

Love it, and can’t wait for the rest of Dark Matter!’

If somebody says "the production sounds like this" could somebody else say "no you're wrong, it sounds like this"? How subjective is the perception of what a particular sound sounds like?

"De/Re-nounce the demigods, king diamond to discard" – This lyric and its delivery are currently my favorite moments in the song.
