One's experience is definitely gear-dependent here, yes.
I definitely have the proper gear :)
Certainly didn't intend to imply whether you did or didn't...merely that the gear one listens on when decoding Dolby Atmos is a major factor in the experience, which is true, arguably moreso than for stereo listening.

In any case, I agree with you that Gigaton is not the best expression of the format.
We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

It's a rabbit hole, but I'll try oversimplified examples, one expensive and one accessible.
We got the deluxe edition bluray so you can...

a) Run an optical cable from a bluray player to a dolby atmos supported surround sound system. There's calibration needed to adapt to room size, speaker location, acoustics etc. This lands on the pricy side.

b) On the accessible side, there are soundbars now that include dolby atmos support, emphasys on support, it's not the full height of it, but decent. Go the optical cable route from a bluray player to the soundbar.

I get that most systems are wireless now, optical wire is a personal preference I guess.

Atmos is the worst thing to happen to audio in a generation.

Granted, I'm probably going out on a limb in inferring from Strat's words, but, I truly don't believe that's the intention here. It's possible to use any set of wired headphones to listen to Dolby Atmos streams via Apple Music, that much is true, but, it's actually an entirely different encoding if you listen this way. I think maybe people might be doing this, mayyybbe not always with the proper settings flicked on in the app, and possibly not having the best experience or first impression as a result.

It's an interesting technology, able to scale effortlessly between setups of any size and budget, but, it's still early days. No matter how one chooses to listen, there are going to be a few settings which need to be tweaked first. No different than stereo, 5.1 Dolby, DolbyEX, DTS, 7.1 Dolby Plus, SACD, or any other audio format when the technology was new.

I believe the 3rd generation, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max are.

Don’t know the differences in those.

The Pros are, but as was mentioned above, it’s fake 7.1, relying on an algorithm to try to approximate a 7 channel layout. I’ve not used it but I’m extremely skeptical it holds any value whatsoever.
I don't know what the second half of the first sentence means, but it seems important.

I have new air pod pros and some nice desktop headphones. I'll share what they are when I get home. I just need someone to tell me either

A: what I need to do to hear pearl jam atmos mixes or
B: confirm that there isn't enough added to be worth the effort

The encoding will be a binaural approximation and not the full enchilada, true, but, the actual mix itself will differ from every other format, which makes it unique, at the very least.

There's also a really good chance it'll be less peak limited and/or digitally compressed, too, as is often the case with many of these.
