"Everybody else pays for someone else's mistake" is unnecessarily wordy, especially for a repeated chorus line, when Ed would particularly benefit from limiting his word count.

I thought this part was kinda brilliant. I guess my taste in rock anthems isn't as sophisticated as tree's.

I'll give you that "it's strange these days" is kinda meh, at least on paper, but I like the cadence of his delivery and the overall message feels relevant, at least to me.

It speaks to a general feeling that the world is entering a moment of profound and permanent change, and that many of the negatives inherent to that change could have been mitigated if some one or people had been held accountable before we got here.

That’s definitely a feeling that’s elevated right now. among a broad swath of people and ideologies.

It’s a good lyrics because it invites everyone to share in a feeling, without any prerequisites that you agree with the singer about the specifics of it.

To address this recurring argument: I DO feel like the woman I am married to, I am married to because I currently love her, not the idea of her I fell in love with when I asked her to marry me. And if I fell out of love, I'd work to address the issues, and if that didn't work, I wouldn't be with her anymore. I'd like to believe if I had no memory of our history together, I'd still want to be married to her for her current qualities. I refuse to be merely bound out of obligation, so to speak, because that is not living truthfully in the moment. And I love music I love because of its audial qualities; It sounds good to me as I listen to it, not because I am rooting for its success, like I do with sports. I am not saying this is the only way to be, and I do seek to understand what I don't. There are many ways to enjoy a thing. It is unfortunate I am so often interpreted as condescending. That is not my intention. Just chattin' and participatin' in the only way I know how.

Very fair assessment. Personally though I loved Binaural. Post-Binaural it goes south pretty quickly. RA had glimpses of hope then…. nothing.

I was thinking about this exact thing last night about the lyric. Something relatable to anyone no matter beliefs or ideologies. Now whether that promotes unity or further division is another discussion for another day.

But, Ed has always been good at writing a lyric that’s general enough that almost anyone can interpret their own way.

I agree that the production feels competitively smooshed and a bit claustrophobic, and while I think that works for this song…I imagine the overall record will suffer from it the way Earthling did.

I missed the 50 pages of discussion that I assume were about the production but...I dunno I feel like its the biggest thing holding me back here. Like...there's something in the production that just sounds "Old rock band but we can still rawk, right?" that's very cliche for aging rock bands? I dunno. There's something missing, something too produced maybe? Or forced...hollow energy maybe? That prevents it from capturing the energy of their older sound.

Still, after Backspacer and LB it really seemed the band was very washed up. Gigaton was great, and this is at least kinda promising? But I think it likely will not be one of my favorites on the album (I hope). DOTC was just more interesting and fresh and different. This.....taken out of the context of it being new PJ if some new fan came in now and heard their whole discography I don't see this song holding up as one of their best most memorable or most iconic songs or anything. I think people just like it cause it sounds kinda like the PJ they like. But that 'kinda' is the key word here for me.

But maybe it will grow on me.
