The cool things about selling a record are

Usually I make my money back plus a bit more
I can buy another record and slowly morph my collection into how my music tastes change over time without owning 1000s of albums
my brain still pictures it sitting amongst the rest of them so it’s kinda like it still there, if that makes sense, obviously I just can’t play it anymore
My record collection was too rock based , I needed more jazz, ambient, reggae, blues , downtempo etc stuff which I’m always working on

Your first point about morphing your collection is where I’m starting to get. Previously I always viewed my collection as sort of a time capsule, or a diary so to speak. I could see albums and bands I was into at specific times in my life as my collection has grown with me. Even if those albums rarely get played anymore. But as it’s gotten bigger and take. Up more space, the realistic side of me has started making lists of albums i can part with, even if I’m sentimental to them. Some albums I’m sentimental to or have great memories attached to will absolutely stay, but there are albums loosely connected to time periods that I’m ok dropping now.

Yeah, i still keep a lot of albums just because of sentimental value only, or any excuse i can make up.

some examples
i sold lightning bolt to justify getting "give way"
i sold the AIC duvall-era albums to help pay for a concert trip and now ill feel ok buying the reissues of the 90s stuff when it comes out.(these are good albums, i just wasn't playing them, also the dinos picutre disc in the clear red pvc was hideous)
i was going to sell FNM the real thing but i tested it out and my MOV pressing sounds fantastic so i'm keeping it.
i love superunknown but i can't sit through the 20th anniversary remaster, the CD sounds much better. probably should sell.

in a way, its making a lot more invested in my collection than i was a few years ago.

I'm taking this as definite inspiration to set aside at least 20 vinyls and sell them.
Not my Superunknown though, I have no qualms with that one.

worst case scenario... you spend the money on more LPs haha.


for superunknown, it might just be my setup, which isn't very impressive. I found the lowend was brought up muddling everything up but maybe i could fix it if i had a better EQ.

Depends on how much time, space and patience you have, but generally:

1) Discogs: you’ll probably get more bang for your buck selling individual records on Discogs. But you’ll need patience as things can sit for a while. They’ve also been consistently upping their fees, so they are taking a bigger and bigger cut. You’ll also need to know exactly what pressing you have, how to grade your records and be confident in it. You’ll need mailers, and know how to package a record. Brace yourself for nitpicky buyers depending on what you’re selling.

2) eBay: similar to Discogs

3) record store: you will get less per record from a record store but you can sell in bulk and quickly. And you don’t have to muck around with shipping. You’re essentially paying for convenience, and it’s up to you to find that number that you’re comfortable with.

4) message boards / Facebook marketplace: less fees, but always use PayPal/venmo goods and services payments. They will take a fee, but it’s less than Discogs/eBay and it will cover you from asshole buyers. It’s also a good way to sell bundles.

5) have a record garage sale: I’ve known people to just have a traditional garage sale for records and just post about it on local networks. Avoid all fees. But you’re also introducing yourself to haggling, theft, and general conversation with record collectors who can be absolutely draining
