I do it because Mike Watt is one of my all-time favorite musicians, a guy who has embodied and lived a lot of my ideals about music as a capitalist enterprise; and who often simply refers to himself simply as Watt.

Wotman's stage name feels like an intentional nod to Mike Watt, despite Wotman's demonstrated ideals about music as a capitalist enterprise being about as far from Mike's as one could get: A bunch of vapid music produced for maximum commerialimpact.

To me, there isn't a correct answer, because both have their pros and cons. I think that in the long run, it's quite possible that Gigaton is loved for its production and Dark Matter is loved for its songs. Obviously this is all speculative, but if that's the case, I'll probably love Dark Matter more, because a) I listen for the songs, and b) there's always such and such obscure mix that can be purchased or found that will improve things on the production side.

This but I’d be astonished if Wotman’s adoption of “Watt” was in any way an intentional nod to Mike Watt.

It’s a dumb name because there’s already a notable and influential musical figure who has gone by the name Watt for the last four decades, and the dude seems kind of like an aloof industry bozo who churns out cookie cutter rock slurry for old bands who want to feel like they’ve got their finger on the pulse.

I’m sure he’s a nice dude, means well and is having the time of his life.
