I honestly wish Andrew Wotman produced the sessions then passed it off to Alan Moulder, Josh Homme, or somebody like that to mix the record.

So get the Dolby Atmos mix done by Josh Evans and that Nick guy and you'll be as happy as can be, right? Honest question, no snark.

I'm waiting to hear reports from others. If I hear that it's a completely different mix, with significantly increased dynamic range and actual mid-range presence, I will 100% buy a pair of Atmos cans just for this album.

Piecemeal project, not playing together much, put together over a long period but captured by an excellent sound mixer?

To me, there isn't a correct answer, because both have their pros and cons. I think that in the long run, it's quite possible that Gigaton is loved for its production and Dark Matter is loved for its songs. Obviously this is all speculative, but if that's the case, I'll probably love Dark Matter more, because a) I listen for the songs, and b) there's always such and such obscure mix that can be purchased or found that will improve things on the production side.

In the end, it's whatever process gets you the best result. But even the process you use may get you different results than you expect. Maybe the band didn't get together much when making Gigaton, I don't really know, but there's stuff on that record that sounds far more like it's based off a live take of a band in a room than DM, which sounds pretty produced and spitshined (which, in and of itself, isn't necessarily a bad thing). But the process only matters so much; sometimes live in the studio sounds labored, and sometimes you spend a year in the studio to get to the place where something sounds like it only took ten minutes.

Believe it or not, my wife is one of them! When I met her, never once did I consider sitting her down and saying, "Look here, woman...You need to reconsider that last name if you don't wanna get kicked outta my bed!" just because Double Nickels on the Dime is one of my favorite records ever.
