Would have to agree. Love Gigaton but it ends on an absolute thud with Retrograde and River Cross. Tried to revisit these songs after two years of not listening to them and I think I dislike them even more now. End Gigaton with the spectacular Comes Then Goes and you have top tier PJ album.RockPusher wrote:I adore Gigaton but agree with this.Strat wrote:While I actually really like Ed's songs, Gigaton definitely suffers from too much Ed

I rated it 3 stars. Been pretty consistent after the initial hour or so. It's a fine song with great energy.tragabigzanda wrote:I can’t keep up with this thread but I feel like your rating of this song has varied wildly over the last 48 hours?Monkey_Driven wrote:This would rank in the lower third of Gigaton songs if it was on that album.

Re: Dark Matter (song)
i am kind of like a 3.53 at the moment
+0.06
i may have been to harsh on the laser sounds
and have not yet commented on Mike's spirited solo
basically they needed 30 more seconds of music and Wottman just suddenly pointed at Mike, who quickly snapped out of a daydream, and started hitting all the fastest licks in a row he could before the measures ran out
and then they put it to press
i can live with that

I think I like the song now more than I did at first but I'd still probably drop my score to a 3 from a 4. I was probably judging it too much on a modern PJ scale. It's a solid album track but I doubt I'll seek it out once the entire album is released.

My hope is that this album flows as well as Gigaton. I almost always listen to the entire album with that one.Homeboyd wrote:I think I like the song now more than I did at first but I'd still probably drop my score to a 3 from a 4. Re: Dark Matter (song)
One thing I've noticed in the discourse about this song is that there appears to have been a bit of a sea change regarding Gigaton on the board, particularly since I drifted away and became almost inactive around here. Perhaps it's just a normalization of recency bias, but I do recall the album being regarded more fondly in a broad sense than it appears to be these days. For what it's worth, I gave it a listen yesterday after not hearing it in a few months, and I still find it remarkably strong considering the direction the band headed in starting around 2008. I can see why some might call it stiff and criticize some of the performances, but for me it returned to me the band I loved so much.
Anyway, back to "Dark Matter," I have to agree with all the praise going to Matt's playing. That's certainly one element of this tune that is basically unmatched on Gigaton (though his drum machine imitation on "DoTC" is laudable), or really anything following Avocado. I keep getting parts of the song replaying in my head, and it's caused me to warm up to the whole thing more than my initial response, though I'm trying to avoid actually listening to it so I don't suffer from familiarity fatigue when the full album lands.

I think Gigaton is pretty highly regarded...some peeps just hate modern PJ so really nothing they do is gonna change that. I also recently revisited it and it's really damn good and and is tracked well and flows great for the most part.

I love Gigaton! Its been 4 years so i think we've passed the recency bias stage. It was their best album in 20 years at the time of release.
I waiver between 3.5 and 4 stars for Dark Matter and would probably have about 2/3 of Gigaton ranked ahead of it. For the most part im kind of over the 3 minute rockers from modern Pearl Jam, though for whatever reason Superblood Wolfmoon really clicked for me when i finally got to hear it within the context of the whole album. Hoping the same will happen with Dark Matter.

I wish I felt that way. It is now tied with The Fixer for lead single I'm least interested in.Leatherhead wrote:This song rules.

Re: Dark Matter (song)
Like the many others who really dig this tune, I have made many comments about why. TL:DR version is it has a tremendous energy, Ed's angry delivery of intelligent lyrics is matched by the rhythm and flow of the other musicians, and it builds to one of the most satisfying climaxes of any PJ song in the last 20 years.Tj wrote:What is you like?RockPusher wrote:Leatherhead wrote:This song rules.

Re: Dark Matter (song)
The pre chorus is great . There is a guitar fill that is cool I think it's a Baritone. Mike's solo ki Kicks off in a fantastic way. When I think about it the main body of the chorus is bland. The intro doesn’t have a classic PJ hook and I get why. It was a choice to let Matt shine and he does so maybe let those intro drums carry on a bit longer. I think if it could have used a variation of the pre chorus as the intro that would have been cool. The final chorus dropped completely with the solo going into a dark ominous coda. I waited during the bridge for the main riff to resolve and it never did.

Re: Dark Matter (song)
yes, me too; Gigaton works front to back for me, which is how I now feel about every PJ album until "the dark age" of Backspacer and Lightning Bolt; if Dark Matter rules that hard then they might have just returned themselves to "favourite band" statusRockPusher wrote:My hope is that this album flows as well as Gigaton.
