Fair enough. One possibility I am open to is that when Tremor Christ came out, that just wasn't the sound I wanted out of this band; many albums later, my expectations have fallen away somewhat and I am just more willing to appreciate things as they come.

Still, I maintain that Tremor Christ does not really change much for its duration; it might intensify, rise and abate, but it doesn't really "travel" anywhere. In other words, if you don't dig that initial vibe, you're unlikely to change your opinion, whereas w/ Infallible there are different entry points to the song.

This is actually why I think Infallible wouldn't be much of a single. Hearing it live made me realize how "same-y" it is throughout, regardless of the chorus. It's not designed to grab you by the lapels at any point. And I wear lapels a lot.

Well, I do agree that there's no lapel-grabbing happening during the song; it's same-y in the sense that it doesn't go sky-high, although there is a nice vocal shift in the latter half where Ed goes into a higher register (or is it a higher key?) that's cool, but it's not earth shaking. When Tremor Christ goes big, it's still on the same wavelength as the entire rest of the song-- it's just bigger.

I wish this song had a "second chorus", a la the "What are you running from?" in ATY, to replace the yeah yeah yeah near the end. It could really break into a new section for that part of the song but doesn't. If it did another unexpected change there, maybe the chorus might just seem more weirdly unexpected in a good way.

The "What are you running from" section is just the verse again, with everyone but Stone Beatling it up a bit.
