I enjoy the song quite a bit but this is the first time I'd say the production is almost ruining my enjoyment of a song. I've been critical of the production of their albums since Avocado but it's mostly been "This would be way better with nicer production" and not much more. The production on this song goes into "this actively annoys me" territory, especially with headphones. I'm actually a little bit mad about it since what I dislike about the song is done completely on purpose. This is not a matter of them not being creative or good songwriters anymore.

I really really want to enjoy this more and it's just this one part keeping me from enjoying it. This is frustrating me.

I'm really interested to see the takes on RM two years from now. I don't imagine a majority will pivot to "I can't even listen to this it sounds so bad," but I bet that at least a few will get there once the hype winds down.

i am certainly capable of enjoying something more or less with better production but the songwriting and performances are so far ahead in terms of what matters to me.

the fancy mix i evidently paid for in the two disc dark matter will be an interesting test. not - ‘will one sound better’ since i assume it will, but will it transform my experience of the song

I'm SO curious about this because it will answer the question: Does Wotman deliver the PT sessions with those shitty drum samples already in place, or does Ghanea add them once he starts mixing?

I have no idea what you are talking about when you say "shitty drum samples" - when I listened to this song on Qobuz this morning, the drums sounded better than ever, but in none of my listens across different formats so far did they ever sound like shitty samples.

I kinda get it.
The snare can sound "aided" by a drum sample right as it speeds up on that drum fill before the guitar solo (02:41).
On the other hand, if some random dude on YouTube can perform it, then it would be a breeze for Matt, right?

Among other reasons, a producer may prefer drum samples (either mixing them in with the 'live drums' or replacing certain hits on particular drums like the kick or snare entirely with samples) because it gives them more control in how they can shape the particular sound. At least, that has been my experience with them, where an engineer/mixer would use them to strengthen the drum sound (at least, to their ears).
