It was just a little joke comment, Harmless...certainly not intended as anything confrontational. We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

When Metallica's Death Magnetic came out, I listened to it in its entirety many times. Everybody always said the production was bad, it never bothered me. I'm sure DM's production won't bother me either. I hardly ever listen to music with headphones, and I don't own high quality speakers.

Re: Dark Matter (song)
in any case, did the drum samples sound better when Dream Theater did them?

Some of them are. Like did you know the engineer who recorded Whitney Houston "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" really over de-essed the vocal in the verses and kinda fucked it? He had to go through manually re-adding his own 'esses' back. If you listen closely you can kinda hear itMs Harmless wrote: (also, production history facts aren't funny)

Re: Dark Matter (song)
One week and prob 50 listens in. DM is still a very strong track. It’s glossy but that doesn’t bother me one bit. I’m able to isolate each instrument at any given time, and the guitars frankly sound better than in loads of other material. Matt’s drumming is powerful and additive - I don’t really give a rats ass that the snare sound isn’t ideal.
Truthfully, so much of their catalogue is filled with muddy production and indiscernible guitar parts that this bright (albeit glossy) production is refreshing. Binaural is a great album but sounds like it was recorded in the adjacent room. Always had a muffled sound to me. DM’s production and mix reminds me of SG and I love that. Ed avoids the temptation to push past his capability zone and so we don’t get any awkward vocal moments.
I find myself listening to the extended version someone here made. It’s just the right duration of segments and clocks in just shy of 4 min. I wish this had been the finished version but oh well.
Still 4/5. Not quite dance, but not too far behind and light years better than at least half their material since yield.

Re: Dark Matter (song)
I asked my friend Cass who is a multiple Grammy Award winning producer what he thought of the drum sound debacle. Specifically I asked if he thinks the drums are real. If you're interested in what a stranger to Pearl Jam who is very studio-knowledgeable has to say, this was his take:
- Spoiler: show
