What’s your take on the divisive King of Comedy?
Didn’t realize it was divisive. I like it
I also listened to monster randomly last week!

I picked up the reissues of UP and New adventures in hifi on LP but I think i want to get an original press of monster

SESSION NOTES:

N. JACKSON ST REHEARSAL STUDIO, ATHENS, GA, JULY 1980

This recording of a rehearsal session was previously thought to be from the Wuxtry Records 6 June 1980 rehearsal, but is now known to be from a July 1980 session at N. Jackson St Rehersal Studio. Probably recorded on a 4-track tape machine.

DRIVE-IN STUDIO, WINSTON-SALEM, NC, APRIL 1981

First recording session with Mitch Easter. These tracks were recorded for R.E.M.’s ‘Cassette Set’ audio tape, to be sent out to clubs, magazines, and record companies. Cassette Set features ‘Sitting Still’, ‘Radio Free Europe’ and ‘White Tornado’. Also included are short clips of the fast version of ‘Sitting Still’, and the first take of ‘White Tornado’, which is halted half way through due to some wrong notes by Peter Buck. About 400 copies of the set were produced, of which 100 were produced with the ‘Radio Free Europe (Radio Dub)’ included here.

RCA STUDIOS, NEW YORK, NY, FEBRUARY 1982

R.E.M.’s demo tape for RCA Records and third overall produced by Kurt Munkacsi. Several of the tracks listed had been recorded prior for the Chronic Town EP, but the rest didn’t see release until their debut LP, and in one case, a film soundtrack 5 years later. While the Chronic Town tracks don’t sound too dissimilar from the EP, the others have many differences from their final versions such as alternate lyrics and arrangements.

RHYTHMIC RIVER STUDIOS, SAN FRANCISCO, CA, NOVEMBER 1983

Ahead of three shows in three nights in California, R.E.M. popped into a San Francisco studio with Elliot Mazer (known for his work with Neil Young and The Band, amongst others) behind the desk, hoping to get some demos for their second album down onto a 2-track. Live in the studio, this recording contains essentially all the new material they had, playing around with B-sides and covers before moving into nine out of the ten songs hat would form Reckoning (only ‘(Don’t Go Back to) Rockville’ doesn’t feature). ‘That Beat’ is likely from a different session.

I have been enjoying that 39 song career spanning live album as of late.

First off, the bass on this thing is really good. Secondly, hearing all of my favorites from the IRS years arranged for maximum amplification gives me a new perspective on the tunes. This is probably the album that I would recommend on the very rare chance that somebody walked up to me in 2024 and asked me to get them started on this band.

it's hard to know where to start with them. A greatest hits doesn't feel quite appropriate, but where to begin?

They have the deepest catalog of any band, I think

Begin at the beginning. For REM, they had a large evolution in their sound and I would say that it’s hard to catch them first in the middle and work back, just as hard as it is to start with the latter albums without context.

Begin at Automatic For The People and then move backwards and forwards at the same time.

That was my experience, though maybe a bit more scattershot. I didn't get really into them until I was probably 19 or 20 in the early 2000s. I bought Automatic for the People because I liked the few songs I had heard from them and quickly became obsessed and got to know their catalogue by buying whichever of their CDs I could find.

I think In Time is a wonderful compilation of their warner years. Its probably very accesible for someone who needs to dive into their work.

As for an album, Monster would be my choice. i know, its a tricky one but if you like Monster you will love whats next and behind.

For the record, if i would have to choose something from PJ i would say No Code.

I feel like, with the whole catalog in the rearviewmirror, I think I'd probably tell someone to start with Murmur. It's not necessarily emblematic of the sound they had throughout their career (though, what is). But it's not like they're a band that had to take a few albums to really get it together; you're starting with one of their classics. And if someone's hooked by that, I think it's so much more fun to be able to go through their entire catalog from the beginning.

New Adventures in HiFi is easily my choice. Love REM but I wouldn’t even hesitate.
