My memory works in such a way that it pulls up visions of places I'd been to when I hear certain songs, because that's where I was when I'd first heard them.
It's like they are linked on a physical level.

The strength of our memories is tied directly to the emotions attached to them.
Our memories do alter as we age, though, it's understandably difficult to detach from those core, foundational experiences.
This is fundamentally an argument of subjectivity vs. objectivity, which every debate in every hobby community I'm a member of eventually seems to boil down to.

Mine too! I’ve found this to be one of the great pleasures of a lifetime of listening to music. And thankfully it works regardless of whether you’re listening contemporaneously to something released last week, or to something recorded 100 years ago.

I’d love to read the Oliver Sachs piece Trag describes. Daniel Levitin’s book “This Is Your Brain On Music” is another interesting read in this same ballpark.

There's absolutely a valuable perspective that comes from experiencing the music "as it happened," and as someone who likes a lot of artists who are long dead or damn near, that perspective becomes increasingly valuable the further it becomes from the norm. When I occasionally come across stories from people who experienced the '50's jazz scene in NYC, or saw Bob Dylan live in 1966, or experienced Beatlemania as it happened, I perk up and listen. That stuff is interesting to me.

However, the idea that this makes a person's rankings or personal preferences any more "definitive" is ludicrous. In this regard, "lifelong fan with unique in-the-moment context" and "fresh-faced listener unburdened by historical or contextual baggage" are simply two different, equally compelling (and equally likely to devolve into overly self-assured idiocy) lenses through which to view the music. All fanbases will slowly morph from being defined wholly by the former to being defined wholly by the latter, so its dumb to begrudge the people on that far end of the spectrum their likely circumstantial moment of experience with the band. Time is on their side, after all.
