I get the impression that Foo Fighters are currently a lot bigger than Pearl Jam. They have many more monthly listeners on Spotify too.

I dont measure a band popularity at any given moment just for Spotify or Apple Music charts or whatever… The Foos may have a more pop appeal, but its also much less of a stable audience than the really big ones! Over time that counts…Pearl Jam will stand the test of time has one of the biggest rock bands ever, I dont think the Foos will achieve that.

Fashion changes, tastes change, but the big ones stay and become relevant again and again, I mean kids playing Last of Us, or watching the series may be inclined to discover the band making it relevant again, same thing with Ed playing songs with Post Malone and stuff like that, new artists and influences make old ones relevant for a new generation.

I think even comparing them in this way the Foos come out on top. You have Miley Cyrus performing their songs. Billie Eilish singing "My Hero" with Dave. Dua Lipa covered them. They played at Joe Biden's presidential inauguration. Prince covered them at his legendary half-time show!

They're a boring band but their place in pop culture and status as one of the most popular rock bands of the moment is undeniable. Pearl Jam were much bigger at the start of their career, but are more of a legacy act at this point IMO

How many bands made a dent in the Britpop scene for example? and who will be remembered? and im not looking at this from the quality of the band standpoint…pop culture has its moment, pearl jam could have became one of those long forgotten bands…they made a path that stands above it…and stands the test of time. pop culture is one thing, becoming a cultural “landmark” in music history is another.

Fleetwood Mac for example is a band who is not relevant in the pop culture for ages…still much more influential and respected and historically relevant than many of their more” pop cultural peers”.

Lots, but the Foo Fighters are far from the flash in the pan you're painting them as. They've sustained a consistent level of popularity for decades, and carved a place for themselves in music history that's at least comparable to PJ's. I think your dislike of the band is causing you to underestimate their reach and influence. (And yes, on a worldwide level, not just the US. They're HUGE in South America. The last time Pearl Jam won a Brit Award was in 1994, the Foo Fighters have won 5 since)

The sole reason why the Foo's are this big is that they are incredibly predictable. The only thing that differs from album to album is the 'unique' way it was recorded or promoted. Their music is always the same. They are this generation's AC/DC. They would never release a No Code and alienate 50% of their fanbase. They say they were influenced by disco on 'Medicine at Midnight' but I hear the same rocker once again, only some minor production changes. And even then they come nowhere near to something like 'DOTC.'.

It seems that Dark Matter is an album that the average PJ fan would really like. PJ's has deliberately shun away from something like this in the past, the Foo are always aiming at what their fans would want.
