The conversation has moved away from where it was this morning (understandable -- rankings were involved), so I'll resist the urge to chime in on the IDLES/PJ/Foo Fighters/cultural relevancy discussion that left at least one poster itchy in a sacred place, but -- lots of great posts that I really enjoyed reading, so thanks. There's a lot of potentially interesting stuff there that could be enjoyable to continue exploring in a separate thread, if others were likewise inclined. Doesn't seem like there's much fondness for such digression here...

Lannegan hated the trees so fucking much so I feel like I should too

Kinda hoping I'm mis-remembering this, but, I feel like I listened to Lanegan on a podcast shortly before he passed, and, he said the brothers were just the most miserable human beings and that they were lucky that he was ever even in a band with him.

I recall being really disappointed hearing that. Not sure if they spoke prior to his passing, but, I hope they were able to exchange some cordial words towards the end. I'd like to think that he at least had some warm feelings towards what they created together

speaking of mr lanegan, where are queens? it's not the worst list i've ever seen. but i'm not sure the arctic monkeys should be ahead of talking heads on any list. and i like both bands.

Doubt it. You should read his book. He fucking hated them so much. He basically hated everyone and everything. Except Mike McCready. He was the only person i think Lannegan spoke kindly of.

Duff, Kurt, Layne... he spoke well of a lot of musicians.

Prato's book, which is comprised solely of interviews from others in the industry structured around topics, has Gary Lee included quite a bit.

So I realised that it was coming up to one year of Mark’s passing, and late last year I got in contact with Gary Lee Conner, the former guitarist for the Screaming Trees. I did an interview with him for the Guitar World website, which came out late last year, and I became somewhat friendly with Gary. After speaking with Gary, I realised it would be great to put together a book where I just interview people that either worked with Mark, were admirers of his work, or just fans.

But I realised the only way I’m really going to do this is if I can get Gary on board. Then also the fact that Mark didn’t really say very nice things about Gary and his book. I also heard insider gossip that although people enjoyed Mark’s book, they didn’t think it was entirely accurate. Through some people we mutually knew. I’m not saying that Mark just completely made up stuff for his book, but… There’s a famous saying that there are two sides to every story and the truth lies somewhere in the middle, or something like that, which if you think about it, is a pretty honest assessment of things. So Gary said yes, that he would be willing to do the interview, and it was a great interview, two solid hours. He was not saying anything mean about Mark. He just said, “I was hurt with what he said”. But he was happy though, that he was able to make peace with Mark Lanegan prior to his passing. That was obviously very comforting to hear. Once I spoke with him then I was able to reach out to other people and say, look, I’m doing this book about Mark, and I already interviewed Gary. Once people heard that Gary was on board, then more and more people were willing to open up and speak to me.
