IMT is great.
Let’s make a list of ACTUAL overrated songs.
I’ll start:
NAIS
3 blind mice
Anything by the Eagles
Everything by the Ramones unless their t-shirt is a song
Mary hand a little lamb
Smell like In Utero

In all serious what Pearl Jam albums have great production throughout? I give it Yield and No Code. I also want to say that it aged poorly for awhile. Somehow I find it lovely today and that is Ten.

Just to name a few. There are many others.
I love these songs but would make noticeable changes to the way they sound. EQ, instrumentation, mix, effects, etc.
I can hear the perfect versions of these in my head.

I genuinely wonder what the average hearing quality is for a bunch of 40-something rock fans on this board, and to what extent that plays into some of this stuff.
had distortion in right ear for a while and thought it was damage but went to ear Dr. and it was just significant ear wax buildup
ear pods pack wax down, qtips do too they do nothing
just need a wax clean out by a dr every once in a while
but listening to DM on ear pods max volume does not hurt my ears
when was the last time you had a hearing checkup?

I am not a person to weigh in on the technical side of things, but the albums that have always sounded really good to me, independent of the quality of the songsMs Harmless wrote:Riot ActTj wrote:In all serious what Pearl Jam albums have great production throughout? Vs: Everything just hits hard and captures their power
Vitalogy: Feels sharp and oppressive and vaguely hung over in a way that plays into the songs. Maybe I just love these songs so much I don't notice issue
Yield: Feels sunny and open and hopeful
Riot Act: Feels warm and enveloping and sleepy in a very wintery way
Gigaton: Feels contemplative and muscular at the same time (I feel the impact is similar to what No Code is aiming for. I think it's more successful on Gigaton. Maybe because I prefer it as a body of work)
Every other album I can imagine sounding different. Most of the songs on No Code feel a little anemic to it. I think Joe once described it as underwater, and that feels right. There is a softness and distance to the album that works thematically, but I do think it undercuts the impact of each individual song. Same is true of Binaural. The atmosphere is thematically appropriate, but it makes me less likely to want to actually listen to the songs.
Ten is such an artifact and it's such a HUGE record that for the most part it works, but I can imagine other versions.
Lightning Bolt just ends up sounding sterile
Backspacer and S/T have Eddie choosing to spend a chunk of the albums in that high energy scratchy near scream, which I liked a lot when it came out as a response to the more muted performances on Binaural and Riot Act, but hasn't aged as well, outside of a few songs where it's appropriate.

So now we know what's going on. The reason many of us don't hear what Trag is complaining about is because we're old and losing our hearing. Yes, that explains everything! Dumb, deaf and happy.
p.s. The hearing in my left ear is down to 75% capacity. Please don't take my McCready away
