the few seconds that lead into the solo make almost everything else excusable

matt's drums and mike's wailing scream on the guitar

absolutely fantastic

If there's one thing that they've found in the two albums since Lightning Bolt, it's that tension and release (there's a snippet from the Metal Door Leak, third from last, that exhibits this as well). What's so great about it is that the best PJ has always had that in spades.

I agree with your opening salvo but I’m definitely not part of that cynicism or even conversation about pj on here.
I’ve no time for that avocado record and that’s all I said. Yeeeeaaaaarsss ago.

We have all moved on. For the better.
You almost burned personal pj memorabilia two weeks ago lol

No I actually did burn that. And for this reason ^^ it wasn’t memorabilia either.
Just a stupid jacket doesn’t matter who owned it.

stip wrote:if I can offer a minor PSA for newish members and the regulars (even though the conversation moved on while I was typing this)- Red Mosquito has been, for a long time, a reflexively cynical, borderline toxic forum from the standpoint of actually wanting to enjoy and celebrate Pearl Jam. 20 years of output is grudgingly tolerated at best, and for all the shit some folks like to give fans in the primary forum, we collectively and effortlessly enjoy cutting them down as much as others enjoy praising them. And it's hair lines and physical appearances and petty stupid crap as much as it is critiques of music. We don't deserve the smug superiority we typically feel. We are not better than the 'Jamily', which is at least honest about what it represents. We're usually the opposite side of the same coin, just with better thread management and forum organization. We are half Al Bundy reminiscing over that one football game (to be fair a series of games), and half jilted lover hoping that someday the band will take us back. It can be a lot. There's a reason we have a hard time keeping new members. It can be relentless. I helped build the board, and I will disappear for months at a time.

But I love this place and the people in it. Some of the above is the price we pay for a forum that also has a lot of incredibly funny and incredibly insightful and knowledgeable people. Sometimes both at the same time. There are relationships here that have spanned decades, and it is actually a welcoming and giving and forgiving place if you can adapt to the tone. We don't censor, we welcome dissent, and we generally don't shut or shout people down, though we will sometimes exhaust them into submission.

But every now and then we hit a stretch where folks are excited and optimistic for new music, and the performative cynicism and posturing drops away, and people (or at least a majority) can actually be excited not about what Pearl Jam has done but what they might do. Here, on Red Mosquito. These moments are rare, and they don't last long, but I think it's important to savor them when they happen.

This isn't to say you have love the new thing. You don't have to pretend to like it. You don't even need to keep your mouth shut if you don't. But it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if some of the pounding snark got dialed back just a little bit and we didn't need to score points or get in the way of others experience. Just for a little while. Because after these two to four months we'll revert back to our mean for the next four years. You've got 44 out of every 48 months to shit on what Pearl Jam is doing if you want. It's okay to ease up just a little bit those other four.
You know Stip loves the forum when he implicates himself in the collective "we" despite the fact that he hates the reflexive cynicism more than anyone, and doesn't participate in it himself at all. A sign of a true leader. :heartbeat:

Despite having some negative feelings about the production, I hope my posts on this song have come across as genuine attempts to participate in conversation and not just kneejerk criticisms of the band, and I certainly hope they haven't soured anyone's enjoyment of the song. I don't feel cynical about this song at all; I like it a lot and am glad we have it. I just tend to follow the conversation wherever it feels like the most robust dialogue is happening, and there has been some good, engaging dialogue in this thread (along with some less pleasant stuff), about a song that most people seem to enjoy but that has some contentious elements which are naturally fertile ground for discussion.

Why does he have to go away because of his opinion? We all know how everyone feels about this song. Why doesn’t anyone else have to go away?
because he's traggish

I don't understand the intensity anymore. Seriously.

It's not endless fawning and it hasn't been endless criticism. My goodness. Both sides need to cool down. There's been awesome dialogue along with some banter.

It's definitely not not a song
We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

Just listened to it again, and damn Matt c is on fire. I’m always discovering new things he is doing.

Also noticed Jeff a little more in the mix; wish he was more present.

Hope they do a live take for the video….there is a video coming right ?
