Can't believe no one, in 18 pages, mentioned the obvious The Who vibe. Especially the round round round stuff reminds me of Punk and the Godfather.
Also Ed tries his best to make his strumming sound like Petes....again

For some reason I heard a little shadow of Pinball Wizard in there somewhere. I wasn't too impressed with this song on first listen, but it is fast becoming a highlight.

Yeah, I've caught that Punk/Godfather nod, and a bit of Ed's Petersizing (yeah, I'm calling it that now), but beyond that it doesn't have a lot of Who-ish elements to it.

A little Pinball wizardry in the intro.
There's the dog. You can't fake that stuff. Confess with your mouth.

I hear a little Who, just like Far Behind from ITW, but the REM stands out so much in this one, it's hard not to reference.

Listened again this morning while staring up at the Flat Irons (in Boulder) from the bus window...This song is getting better by the day.

I know everyone has said this already, but this is dripping with early REM influence.

If anybody's not familiar, the Who reference point is at around 1:10 on this song. It's a transitional point in the song, with Pete singing "My generation" through a heavily affected setup (I always thought it sounded like singing into a guitar pickup...I managed to break one, once, and subsequently spent weeks singing into it and playing with how the guitar effects pedals could change my voice).

No. There was an...incident...involving the computer we were using to record, back then, and I lost everything.

This song is really weird to sing, the high parts are actually the easiest parts to do. Does anyone know if Eddie plays guitar live when they do this track? Cos the strumming pattern is actually quite hard to coordinate over the vocal lines

Just saw a video, since when does he have a yellow telecaster? Got a pretty different tone to it too!

That live version sounded great. This will be a fun one in concert.

It was reverse psychology. You're now supposed to be recording your own rendition. I wanna hear you attempt the "Ja-ja Drown, Drown, drown" bit. ;)
Here you go:

Did a terrible "yeayeaah" in the bridge but couldn't be bothered re-doing it, surprisingly not a very fun song to sing besides the high parts. Quite hard to latch onto the lower bits in the bridge/chorus/whatever-you-call-it part too without a vocal guide

It's not an absolutely horrible cover, not very good either, but not bad. Guitar is good.

Anyway, this cover, and I'm sure all of them that will eventually come support why I dislike this underlying song so much. I can not get over that awful, awful chorus. Covers can't fix it, because the underlying melody has to remain... although they can improve the terrible syllable folly.

The verse is OK. The guitar intro is good. The bridge is good. The chorus blows. Horribly. Mainly because of...

Whisp(pea)ered songs inside the wi(aa)nd(ddd)
Breathing i(eeen)n forgive(eaea)ne(eaa)ss
Like vibra(eaaaaea)tio(eee)ns with no en(ennn)d
Hear the plan(eaea)et hummi(eanan)ng

which is not even tolerable, but also because the lyrics and vocal melody are just God-awful.

This is way better than your take on Infallible, which leaves me kinda pissed.

Side note: picturing your avatar singing this is really creeping me out.

Aww man, I didn't realise you'd actually do it. Can't wait to get home and listen to it now lol.
