I just had a conversation with myself.
This is the best song on the record.

Pendulum is dropping. I like that they did this type of song but it needs a friend to go with it.

Re: Yellow Moon
Of all the songs on the new record this is the one that I think suffers worst from its "O'Brienization"--I keep wanting it to be grainier, dustier, closer to that recording of Eddie and Mike playing "Let Me Sleep" in Italy. The composition has an almost Delta-Blues-y, "old weird America"-type vibe to it, and that sort of song isn't meant to scrubbed with a toothbrush until it sparkles squeaky clean. I agree with the people who've said Mike's solos are inappropriate.

Is this song shifting between 6/4 and 5/4?

Re: Yellow Moon
There are a couple of subtle time shifts. I'll have to check what they are, and then I'll probably still be wrong.Mike wrote:Is this song shifting between 6/4 and 5/4?

Re: Yellow Moon
In the verses there's 6/4 or 3/4 going on and then at the end of a phrase it's suddenly 5/4! I always expect another beat. (Only when I'm focussing on it) Low Light does something similar.

Re: Yellow Moon
Ordinarily the rhythm is 6/8 I think. But the last bar of some sections drops some beats, one more than Low Light I think. After I've finished listening to Janelle Monae I'll have a listen...

Re: Yellow Moon
I bet that would sound pretty good (esp since I really love the song), but I think the cleaner, bigger production here gives it a little bit of drama that suits the song.Kevin Davis wrote:Of all the songs on the new record this is the one that I think suffers worst from its "O'Brienization"--I keep wanting it to be grainier, dustier, closer to that recording of Eddie and Mike playing "Let Me Sleep" in Italy. I've come around to mike's solos on this one. I wasn't a fan at first .

Re: Yellow Moon
I think I get what people mean when they say the solos aren't appropriate to the song, but I don't hear it. It's a really bare-bones song, and I feel as if the same song on S/T (for example) would've been really boring. It might've ended up being "Come Back", which was just dull. In this case I think the arrangement and production bells and whistles actually help it to aspire for more. I still think it sounds like R.E.M in its lushness, which is nice. Their production values were often over the top.
