Yeah, there are two or three tracks on here that are better than anything on the last two albums, for me. Whether that means Lightning Bolt is better overall will depend on a lot more time. Years later, S/T has become canon. Hell, even Backspacer has. So I need to wait until LB has had that much time before deciding whether it'll ultimately be a throwaway record, or actually have a lasting impact.

no pearl jam album, even the ones I like the least, have ever felt disposable to me. They may be records I rarely revisit outside of a few favorite songs, but not disposable. I think in part that's because I feel like each of the record really has an idea its exploring or a point it wants to make.
Regarding lightning bolt, I had made this comment a little while back regarding FD and My Father's Son, but there's lots of little moments on this record that sound haunted. By ghosts, by missed opportunities, by regrets, by memories. Subtle little ways they appear in most of the songs. I like that.

Missed opportunities. Yep. Frustratingly, there's a lot that I could read into this album that would make it seem more cool to me. But I doubt that any of it was deliberate on the part of the band, because, as they've said before, they had no plans going in, so any concept or narrative or reason for doing this or that or the other was imposed on the album after the fact. That's a shame.

Look at the last page five symbols a code? Think about what songs those symbols unify, and Ed's interview where he speaks of this as a concept album.harmless wrote:Missed opportunities. Yep. Re: Lightning Bolt: The Official Album Thread
The art / album concept was done after the songs were written, recorded and fought for. Granted, Ed wrote all the lyrics, so there's some thematic unity. But the reasons for making FD such a schlock radio ballad are probably not as cool or ironic as I want them to be. As for the 5 symbols, well, who knows what they mean? There's no code to unlock. But No Code this ain't.Tj wrote:Look at the last page five symbols a code? I just don't get the point of those images, there is no wasted space in the booklet. Those last two pages could have been used for alot of things, but they choose five random images?harmless wrote:The art / album concept was done after the songs were written, recorded and fought for. The images are representative of the songs, sure, I'm not saying anything different. But there's no objective reading of them.Tj wrote:I just don't get the point of those images, there is no wasted space in the booklet. Geez, it's quite simple.
Eye, Heart, Record, Fire, Crescent Moon.
The least obvious of the 5 is the crescent moon, which is often referred to as the 'waxing moon'. So...
I love records (on) melted wax.
Honestly, you guys.

Actually, the moon is the wrong way for a 'waxing' crescent, it's a 'waning' crescent.
So, maybe:
