Bushleaguer's a good song that could have been a great one. It's got some of my favorite music off that record, but it's not one of the spoken word pieces I'd point to as Ed's high point.

Probably surpasses Let the Records Play, though.

True, but it has the advantage of being a straight-up song (for PJ standards), which you'd think would make it easier to warm to than something like Bushleaguer.

It's a whiny, petulant little screed that took a great opportunity to critique one of top 5 worst presidents in American history and turned it into name calling, and the best lyric (born on 3rd) didn't come from Eddie. Bushleaguer is a tremendous missed opportunity that failed utterly in just about every single way, despite the great musical platform the song had.


LTRP is a fun blusey song with a dark chorus juxtaposed with a poppy delivery, which I find interesting. I vastly prefer LTRP to Bushleaguer.

I'd love it if you could say that it doesn't sound like Shania Twain, but I'm afraid it does. You only have to listen to it once. It doesn't bother me in itself, but it's definitely there. What bothers me is just the fact that the song could have done something interesting but doesn't.

So, those who are liking this one: sell it to me. What's to like?

while it may be a somewhat generic blues riff (someone will have to confirm that) I don't mind because I don't listen to much blues. So it feels fresh to me.

I like the dirty sound on the guitars in the verses, and the thumping rhythm that's half fuck off aggressive and half lets hit the dance hall at a dive bar--like it's looking for a fight but not really. Like if Beat It was blues, but then instead of a dance off they decide to drink instead. Mike's solos are good. In general I'm a fan of the lyrics and the story--of all of his lets listen to music songs this one is my favorite lyrically. I think the chorus is catchy and fairly enjoyable (but not as good as the verses). I like he handclaps in the verses and the way the guitars almost sound like brass.

I like the song. I've never loved it, but I like it.

I mean, don't get me wrong, it sounds like blues. But it also sounds like Shania Twain. It doesn't sound like interesting blues, or even natural, authentic blues. It sounds like PJ are dipping their toes into blues when it's not really in their bones.

What bothers me is just the fact that the song could have done something interesting but doesn't.

That's the problem with a lot of this record. Songs that have a glimpse of something good and then a degeneration into mediocrity.
