swallowed whole is a narrow favorite so far, I like the stutter Ed has on the down down down part. Wish it had an outo instead of the abrupt ending. Getaway is next, I find my self dancing the same way Ed does in the car of that promo video every time it comes on. Based on the songs he was working with I think BOB did a good job with this, I like the subtle parts in the back of most of the songs.

I'm probably gonna still get my LB tattoo I talked about. The album is pretty spotty in places, but I still have an attachment to it that warrants a commemoration of some kind. I'm wondering about the symbols on the last page of the booklet, done just in black outline. The lightning bolt seems too obvious.

Missed opportunities. Yep. Frustratingly, there's a lot that I could read into this album that would make it seem more cool to me. But I doubt that any of it was deliberate on the part of the band, because, as they've said before, they had no plans going in, so any concept or narrative or reason for doing this or that or the other was imposed on the album after the fact. That's a shame.

some of the other artists on here will have to correct me if I am wrong, but does everyone always start their artistic process with a clear end point in mind. Or sometimes do you sit down to start writing/painting/playing and end up someplace you never expected.


Pearl jam is a band that wrote a number of classic albums, was one of the most influential bands of the 1990s, are likely future members of the R+R hall of fame, are now being accorded elder statesman of rock status, have been writing and recording together for 20+ years, are all active and prolific musicians in and out of the band, each capable of writing a song, and yet we always shy away from thinking that maybe, just maybe, they actually know what they're doing. It's like we're embarrassed to admit that maybe the band is pretty talented.

That's what I've heard, mainly with authors. They normally talk about having an end point, and then work backwards from there, or work towards via a pre-planned outline.

I don't think so. I think it's that sometimes we know exactly what they're capable of, and that explains our disappointment when they don't quite get there, or fall short completely. But hey, it's fine, no one's trying to take away their vast achievements, least of all me. Favourite band till I die, and all that.

I don't think so. I think it's that sometimes we know exactly what they're capable of, and that explains our disappointment when they don't quite get there, or fall short completely. That's a separate issue, I think, and I'd agree. My standards are higher for Pearl Jam than for most bands (actually,it may be more that PJ is one of the few bands that reliably meets my standards). I just meant that I think we're often quick to dumb down the songs too. While I'll have to agree that I probably over analyze a lot of what's in there, I think there is just as strong, if not a stronger, tendency here to under analyze what's going on.
