Mankind is fun, and over the years as I've gotten enough Pearl Jam to not resent when Eddie isn't singing I have grown to appreciate it. But it's a novelty song, and I would have rather seen Black Red Yellow occupy this weird spot on the album


I've talked about Off He Goes plenty of times. the music is beautiful. One of their prettiest songs. But I've always struggled with this lyrics, and while I think Eddie's vocals on No Code are in general too nasally (this is probably the album of vocals I like the least), it's particularly noticeable here.


Betterman, on the other hand, is simply one of the best crafted and performed bittersweet pop rock songs probably ever. Just a stunning piece we absolutely take for granted after it became a bootleg main stay. The tag from State College 03 remains my favorite.

Of all the 'Eddie does a character songs' Betterman probably has the most emotional depth. And "She lies and says she's in love with him. Can't find a better man" is such a heartbreaking line that explains the entire song. Perfect writing.

Yep, Betterman is great, but Off He Goes clears it. It's one of the best studio recordings they've ever done.

I think if you judge how the studio recordings sound, Off He Goes for me wins by a mile. Better Man transforms itself live on a good night, and Off He Goes barely gets played possibly because it doesn’t naturally fit into an arena rattling experience, but the strength of its studio recording pushes it forward for me. And that’s I think saying a lot of my end since I probably listen to a fair deal more live music than studio.
