Re: MM 2-2 Immortality vs. Lukin vs. In My Tree
Lukin is a perfectly fine detour whose music has aged better than the somewhat shrill lyrics. But it's a minor song (by design) against two powerhouses.
In My Tree is quite good, if (I think) somewhat overrated (I'm with Ruddo on this and Get Right). And the lyrical shift from youth to innocence on In My Tree (and No Code) is an interesting and mature development after Vs. and Vitalogy. The soaring moments are powerful.
But Immortality is a stone cold masterpiece. The performance beautifully captures both the cold, lonely desolation the singer is feeling, and the paradoxical lingering warmth that comes from sharing it. It's anxious and resigned, nervous and oddly determined. Love the lyrics and the central imagery, Mike's solo, and how richly colored and textured every moment of this song is.
It's probably not even the best song on Vitalogy, but it's the best song in this bracket.

In My Tree is top 10, but Immortality is top 5. I say this every year that the Benaroya Hall performance sold me on it, but the Give Way version might make it the best song in the Pearl Jam catalogue. Immortality.

Pretty certain STIP just runs march madness so he can copy and paste excerpts from his book.
Or the flipside, copy and paste his posts to this book!
Brilliant
Immortality duh.

Immortality and In My Tree are both top 10 songs but id give a slight edge to In My Tree.

Immortality and IMT are top 5 for me. I would've thought I'd vote for IMt but I took immortality since it's better live.
