Re: Sirens
I see it the same way as you, as bad as i Am at hearing hearing lyrics and knowing the story they are telling, that one was pretty obvious.evenslow wrote:My use of the term "middle-aged" was not meant as an insult, rather, more of a fact. The guy writing it is middle-aged and I picture him speaking to his wife and kids when he's writing it.
Everyone else's interpretation can obviously be as broad as necessary. The sirens come for us all, my friends.

And, I have the same feelings about both songs.darth_vedder wrote:It's weird aint it? I wrote about this in the YM thread yesterday...YM is a song I should like, and Sirens is a song I shouldn't like. YM is the type of song I'd rather them explore more into. This is the road I would rather PJ go down; Sirens is not. Yet, I think (at this point) I like Sirens more. Crazy? Yes, and I have no explanation for it.EJ wrote:Its okay. You're not alone. Re: Sirens
This song has gradually won me over--it's difficult not to be impressed by how perfect a facsimile it is of that '80's rock ballad style, intentional or not, so much so that I find myself nodding along at the astuteness of a lyric like "we danced with laughter in the ever after" rather than seething with rage at the idea that an otherwise sensible person would voluntarily record himself saying such a thing. Every time I hear it I feel like it's reminding me of a very specific song that I can't put my finger on (for some reason my mind keeps returning to "High Enough" by Damn Yankees, though I don't think that's it), but I think that might just be because it does such a thorough job touching on virtually every component of the genre that my mind is trying to convince me that it's already part of the great spandex pantheon.
Put it another way: imagine going to restaurant and seeing an extremely well-dressed man at a nearby table--an Armani suit, really expensive shoes, the whole works--who then turns his head to the side and you notice that in one of his ears he is wearing a huge dangly earring made out of big purple rhinestones. Of course you immediately dismiss it as garish, but you still spend the whole night staring at it. This song is the dangly purple rhinestone earring of the Pearl Jam catalog--a fashion faux-pas that you know could have the taste police swarming the place with warrants within seconds, but you don't call because in your heart you can't wish ill fortune upon such absurdity.
