Dude, it seems like you like the song and want to like the song, but are held back by realizing that it's poppier than it needs to be and a belief that objectively it doesn't do anything particularly groundbreaking. Just enjoy the song. If you like it, you like it. That's fine. And if you don't like it, well, that's fine as well.harmless wrote:This one's getting better. Re: Infallible
Yep. That. There are like cut-and-pasted organ/synth notes going on, with random stabs of guitar distortion, reminiscent of, but more random than, the delay on You Are. They compliment the lazy funk groove in the drums and bass. That groove is somewhat lost in the choruses, but for once I actually like that Matt goes to the ride cymbal, keeping to the ghost-notes on the snare etc. I also like the fuzzy guitars being lower in the mix. It changes the song considerably but I think it works as the only example in the catalogue. It's a pop song nodding to the stoner rock of Riot Act, but with a jarringly bright chorus. Since we already have Riot Act, that's OK. There's enough there that I like, to make the slightly flat chorus matter less. I like that they tried this experiment even if it doesn't all work.evenslow wrote:The interesting part is the synthesizer thing that powers the whole thing instead of guitars. STONE GOSSARD: There’s a percussion thing going on in there. I can’t remember what it’s called but it’s this little electronic percussion creator that’s run through a whole bunch of effects and it’s just sort of a little syncopated ear candy that Brendan helped create as the bed of that track.

But 4/5, it is everything that you've just described which has been making me wonder whether I liked it. I don't mind admitting to liking something everyone else hates. See: "Sirens." My only issue with Infallible is that I wish I knew how to produce songs, and that they'd hired me to do this one.evenslow wrote:This type of thinking is what destroys 1300 page threads.4/5 wrote:Dude, it seems like you like the song and want to like the song, but are held back by realizing that it's poppier than it needs to be and a belief that objectively it doesn't do anything particularly groundbreaking. Ok, I get that. It just seems like for for the last week or so I've been watching you waffle on your opinion of the song, and I interpreted it as being the result of the conflict I described.harmless wrote:But 4/5, it is everything that you've just described which has been making me wonder whether I liked it. That'll be what's creating that choppy "You Are" cut-and-paste effect there. Cool. It reminds me a little of Peter Gabriel's approach to rock music.EJ wrote:STONE GOSSARD: There’s a percussion thing going on in there. I forgot to mention percussion. This song has lots of cool percussion layering that, if produced more naturally, would be very reminiscent of what was done on "Who You Are". So the fact that it goes into Pendulum, which also experiments with a lot of percussion, is really nice.

Nothing wrong with that. Pearl Jam very rarely leads me to instantaneous opinions, especially more recently.4/5 wrote:Ok, I get that. Okay, listen. I goddamn LOVE Infallible. I have a feeling I'll be one of this boards biggest champions of the song. But what you're saying here... just... just shut up. No, no Stip!stip wrote:it sounds familiar without conjuring up any specific memories, almost like a genre baseline kind of song.
In either case I think infallible is much better.

I keep listening to this song to see what i'm missing. I think this is getting bonus points for being old and first. I mean, it's a nice enough song, but I can't imagine myself ever really caring about this outside of a time capsule kinda way
how this ended up number 57 on a top songs of all time list is beyond me.

Re: Infallible
Really excited to hear this song tomorrow in Brooklyn. I'll be belting out that chorus at the top of my lungs!
And also, may I suggest that the bridge in this song is one of the more tasteful choices on the album?
