The interesting part is the synthesizer thing that powers the whole thing instead of guitars. Thing.

Yep. That. There are like cut-and-pasted organ/synth notes going on, with random stabs of guitar distortion, reminiscent of, but more random than, the delay on You Are. They compliment the lazy funk groove in the drums and bass. That groove is somewhat lost in the choruses, but for once I actually like that Matt goes to the ride cymbal, keeping to the ghost-notes on the snare etc. I also like the fuzzy guitars being lower in the mix. It changes the song considerably but I think it works as the only example in the catalogue. It's a pop song nodding to the stoner rock of Riot Act, but with a jarringly bright chorus. Since we already have Riot Act, that's OK. There's enough there that I like, to make the slightly flat chorus matter less. I like that they tried this experiment even if it doesn't all work.

That'll be what's creating that choppy "You Are" cut-and-paste effect there. Cool. It reminds me a little of Peter Gabriel's approach to rock music.

I forgot to mention percussion. This song has lots of cool percussion layering that, if produced more naturally, would be very reminiscent of what was done on "Who You Are". So the fact that it goes into Pendulum, which also experiments with a lot of percussion, is really nice.
