Might have been somewhat of a trite recap, but, I'm feeling really under the weather today, my guard is lowered, and reading that article made me feel a bit better.
Thanks so much for posting those scans, Hypnosomnia.

We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

Time to move on to a serious topic of conversation. The song titles on Dark Matter lean really heavy into the back half of the alphabet

1. Scared of Fear 4:24
2. React, Respond 3:31
3. Wreckage 5:00
4. Dark Matter 3:31
5. Won't Tell 3:28
6. Upper Hand 5:57
7. Waiting for Stevie 5:41
8. Running 2:19
9. Something Special 4:07
10. Got to Give 4:37
11. Setting Sun 5:44

9 out of the 11 song titles (82%) come from the back 65% of the alphabet. How significant is this on a scale of very to extremely?

It's about time that half of the alphabet gets a time to shine. For too long they've been towards the back of the line.

For comparison:

Ten: 2/11 18% (a complete inversion of Dark Matter, and with the two career bookend albums. Significant? Probably!)
Vs: 3/12 25%
Vitalogy: 4/14 29%
No Code: 4/13 31%
Yield: 2/13 15%
Binaural: 4/13 31%
Riot Act: 3/15 20%
S/T: 4/13 31%
Backspacer: 4/11 36%
Lightning Bolt: 4/12 33%
Gigaton: 6/12 50%

So we do see that Gigaton's naming conventions had to walk so Dark Matter could run

That's some serious skew.

now do all studio record song titles. would love to see a normal distribution. Stone is surely making this happen if we see a typical bell curve.

Like I would even begin this conversation without plans to do this for all studio albums. I'm a god damned professional

RVM has 7/33 or 21% So this Dark Matter song title distribution is pretty compelling evidence that they weren't just looking to create a hits factory album

Lost Dogs: 8/36 (counting the hidden track) and 22%. So it's not like they've been writing back of the alphabet songs on keeping them off the record.
