Eds best vocal melodies

Post by Mike »

I was just listening to Parachutes and thought Eddies vocal melodies in this song are really really pretty.

This made me think: What do you think are Eds best vocal melodies? Ignoring the performance etc., just the melodies themselves.

thats a great question, Mike. Ive found that Ive enjoyed his vocal melodies more as he has gotten older and he’s developed greater craft with them, even though most of my favorite performances are from earlier albums

I see that. I'm not quite sure I enjoy his melodies more as he has gotten older, but they certainly feel more...crafted and thought out? He developed a way of creating some real earworms as he gets older. He developed a knack for some tuneful pop/pop rock songwriting.

Light Years.

I have a visceral memory of sitting in my car just after midnight on release day and hearing that first verse for the first time.

Not Ed's per se (though he's typically the one singing) but Stone's songs always strike me as having really great (and fairly unconventional melodies). No Way, All Those Yesterdays, Strangest Tribe, Rival, Fatal...all really striking.

Tremor Christ, Brain of J, Light Years, In Hiding, Man of the Hour, Can't Keep, Parachutes all jump out as well. Sometimes is another one that isn't really conventional in how it unfurls, but his melody and phrasing make each line really stick with you.
